Halifax 60 Dewsbury Rams 20: Tries galore as Fax take top spot

HALIFAX are looking down on the rest of National League One today after cruising past rock-bottom Dewsbury Rams at the Shay.
Matt Calland's second-placed side went into the game looking for the 15-point margin of victory they needed to pip title favourites Salford to top spot.
In the end, they got that and plenty more besides, with full back Miles Greenwood and centre Jon Goddard both scoring twice in an 11-try rout.
The Rams, fired up by caretaker boss Warren Jowitt, a former Bradford teammate of Calland, lived with their hosts for almost 20 minutes before being swamped by some irresistible attacking play.
Fax were only rarely at their best during the 80 minutes, but when they did click into gear, their pace, passing and running angles were simply too much for the hapless Heavy Woollen outfit.
Goddard's two tries were both classic threequarter play, while Greenwood's first touchdown 10 minutes into the second half was a spectacular 70 metre dash after a brilliant burst and offload from prop Dana Wilson.
Greenwood went on to score a second, the result of an increasingly productive partnership with Graham Holroyd, and might have had four if French referee Thierry Alibert had not spotted a brace of forward passes after he had completely fooled the Rams defence on a couple more occasions.
Calland's current makeshift attack, with loose forward Paul Smith at stand off and Janan Billings doing 80 minutes at hooker, which was specifically devised to cover for the absence of injured playmakers Sean Penkywicz and Mick Govin, has now scored 116 points in two matches.
The coach probably would not want to admit it, but that must have exceeded even his expectations.
And with Penkywicz strutting around pot-less on the sideline yesterday, and Calland dropping heavy post-match hints that the long-running hunt for a specialist half back might be about to end as well, Fax's licence to thrill is showing no signs of expiring.
Ironically, given the blowout final scoreline, they had started with a whimper rather than a bang, allowing the Rams, who took a first-minute lead through Pat Walker's penalty, to march downfield relatively easily without really threatening to concede a try.
As always though, when Fax moved the ball, the gaps just opened up.
There were 13 minutes on the clock when Goddard scored the first of his brace, slipping between two defenders straight from a scrum, putting the hammer down and racing away to touchdown.
Holroyd, who had a hugely effective day without hitting the stellar form he had against Batley a fortnight ago, missed the conversion and the 4-2 lead lasted a matter of seconds, Goddard's opposite number Andy Bostock outjumping Lee Greenwood to claim Ryan Smith's cross field kick and Walker converting for 8-4.
Fax's response was immediate, Holroyd sending Paul Smith over with an inside pass after feinting to kick close to the line and then instantly creating his side's third touchdown, returning prop Paul Southern claiming a ricocheting grubber kick.
That made it 16-8, and although Walker cut the gap to one score with another penalty, it was already evident the Rams did not have the defensive answers to the questions they were being asked.
Billings darted over just before the half hour, accelerating out of dummy half to make it 22-10, before James Haley capped some great approach play from Southern, Lee Greenwood and Richard Varkulis, with a score in the right hand corner four minutes before the interval.
And when Billings sent the irrepressible Dave Larder powering in on the next set of tackles, it was game over at 30-10.
Earlier in the year, Fax might have let things rest there, but Calland's players are heeding his plea for ruthlessness.
Dewsbury old boy Frank Watene rampaged in four minutes after the interval, before Wilson set up Greenwood for his long range effort.
That was 42-10, although the gap frustratingly narrowed to 42-14 when Chris Langley finally took advantage of a wealth of penalty-induced possession close to the Fax line to score his side's second try.
But Holroyd danced over at the other end for 48-14, before conjuring a neat flick pass for Greenwood's second of the afternoon.
Lee Greenwood and Goddard then reversed their usual roles, the wingman sending his centre away down the touchline and the ex-Hull KR player finishing brilliantly, disposing of Bryn Powell with a hand off before beating full back Tom Colleran all ends up with some fancy footwork on his way to the posts.
Holroyd's conversion, his eighth, brought up the 60, before the Rams had the last word, Austin Buchanan going over on Fax's right hand side.

STARMAN
Rugby league fans everywhere love the unlikely hero.
And without wishing to be disrespectful to Janan Billings, Fax's likeable Australian hooker probably falls into that category.
The diminutive former Conference amateur doesn't look like the kind of player physically capable of turning in 80 minutes in one of the most demanding positions on the field.
But there was no bigger thorn in Dewsbury's side yesterday than the little man from Rochdale Mayfield.
Billings punched well above his weight in defence, relentlessly picked out the Rams' big men when they were slow getting to their feet at marker, and scooted in for a fine try.
He also showed a different dimension to his game, taking the pressure off Graham Holroyd with some playmaking trickery of his own and earning three points in the season-long Star Man competition into the bargain.
After a steady start to his Halifax career, Miles Greenwood is suddenly flying.
The ex-Leigh player dismantled Batley a fortnight ago and caused Dewsbury plenty of problems all afternoon.
Greenwood's footwork and speed mean he is always capable of breaking the line, and with Holroyd supplying the ammunition, he was virtually untouchable close to the whitewash.
He scored two tries, had a couple more harshly ruled out, and generally looked a class act.
The final point goes to David Larder, who is probably in the form of his Fax career at the moment.
The veteran back rower hit hard, ran hard, worked hard and scored yet another fine try.
Enough said.
