HALIFAX have been handed a potentially tricky draw for the Northern Rail Nines, being paired with Championship rivals Sheffield and Championship One high flyers Oldham in pool E.
Both clubs boast a clutch of ex-Fax players on their rosters, with the Eagles the only side to beat Fax in league football so far this season.
The tournament will take place in Blackpool on the weekend of the Northern Rail Cup final - July 11 and 12
- with the preliminary rounds at Fylde RUFC and the final and plate final being played as curtain raisers to the main event of the weekend.
Five pools were drawn by Northern Rail's Heidi Mottram, with four teams contesting pools A, B and C with three in both D and E.
The top two teams in Pools A, B and C, in addition to the top teams from pools D and E will progress from the group stages on Saturday to the Northern Rail Nines Trophy on Sunday.
Pool A: Swinton, Rochdale, Blackpool, Dewsbury.
Pool B: Batley, Keighley, Hunslet, Doncaster.
Pool C: London Skolars, Leigh, Gateshead, York.
Pool D: Whitehaven, Workington, Featherstone.
Pool E: Oldham, Sheffield, Halifax

York leapfrogged Oldham into second in Co-operative Championship One after overcoming a half-time deficit to post a 20-18 victory.
The Roughyeds started the game just one point ahead of their hosts and tries from Neil Roden, Tommy Goulden and Chris Baines as well as three goals from Andy Bullard secured them an 18-14 lead.
However, the hosts hit back to score six points and move to within six points of leaders Dewsbury.
John Oakes, David Clayton, Tom Haberecht and Paul Hughes all went over for the Knights with Adam Mitchell adding two goals.

Can't see anyone living with us in nine's. Sheffield's strength is in the forwards and Oldham, good as they might be, they are not a patch on free scoring Fax

Someone call the engraver

As usual ala the Northern Rail, no seedings means a complete farce when selecting groups or knockout ties.

Pool A: Swinton, Rochdale, Blackpool, Dewsbury
Pool B: Batley, Keighley, Hunslet, Doncaster
Pool C: London Skolars, Leigh, Gateshead, York.
Pool D: Whitehaven, Workington, Featherstone.
Pool E: Oldham, Sheffield, Halifax

Pool A contains all NL2 sides
Pool B contains 2 NL2 sides and 2 of the bottom 3 from NL1 (one of which have no players left as in admin)
Pool C contains 2 from each league but the NL1 sides are currently 8th and 10th in the league
Pool D contains 2 of top 6 NL1 sides
Pool E contains best side in NL1, 7th in NL1 and 3rd (was 2nd till last night) in NL2

Two NL2 teams guaranteed to go through with another likely from pool B although Donny might like 9 players as won't have to raise a full team.

However looking at official site, says that Pool D and E play each other rather than teams in your group so even harder for Fax as have to play 5th and 6th from our league!

"Teams in Pools A, B and C will play round robin format against each team in their group. The top two sides from each group will progress to Sunday’s Northern Rail Nines Trophy competition whilst the bottom two will enter the Plate competition.
Meanwhile teams in Pool D will play each team in Pool E with the top side from each group qualifying for the Trophy competition and the remaining teams contesting the Plate."

The draw stinks but with a big game away in France the following weekend will we put out our best side? The lack of an U21's this year will mean we will have to play plenty of first choice players. If we go there wanting to seriously win the cup then we should easily achieve it with the quality of players we have. Greenwood, Black, Penky, Patterson, Roberts, Beswick, Royston, Worrincey, Haley etc etc, 9 a-side? Try Time

Always thinking, Gleeson and Govin on the bench!! Bring them on in the last 10 minutes when others are tired. Oh hang on, how long each way is it? Maybe bring them on after 2 minutes when everyone is tired!!
To be honest I'd leave out Black, Penky, Beswick and Gleeson. Play the Bowman lads with Barker too

Does it really matter???

All that can result from this pointless exercise will be injuries to key players.

You can also script what will happen - Fax will murder the opposition in qualifying, get to the semi and blow it.
