KIWI prop Frank Watene has given Halifax the perfect filip ahead of tomorrow night's sudden-death National League One play off date with Widnes by agreeing a new contract with the club.
Watene, who doubles as the club's community coaching chief, has arguably been the club's best player over the last six weeks, posting a string of outstanding displays.
"We've asked Frank to shoulder a lot recently, because we've had guys like David Larder and Dana Wilson out of action through injury," said coach Matt Calland.
"He's really stepped up to the plate for us and he's found his best form at the most important stage of the season.
"I actually think he's really developed as a player this year and he's having a lot of success because he's been mixing his game up.
"He has been pushing his nose through the line and looking for off loads, getting passes away before the line and running some really good decoys for us.
"Other teams target him because they know the impact he creates when he comes off the bench and it's creating opportunities for the players around him.
"I am really happy that he is going to be with us for another year."
Watene joined his teammates at last night's penultimate training session, one which Calland tagged as the "best since the start of the season."
Long-term casualties Dana Wilson, David Larder and Mick Govin all took part, giving Calland a wealth of selection options ahead of the date with the Vikings.
Even if they don't figure against Steve McCormack's side, the trio are likely to come into contention for Saturday's reserve play off showdown at Leigh.
"We had 13 v 13, full contact," said Calland.
"They still put a few passes down, but in terms of intensity and energy it was great.
"Govin, Larder and Wilson all took part and came through okay.
"Whether or not tomorrow will come too early for them we will have to see.
"If they don't figure in that game, they'll probably get a run at Leigh, certainly if we win tomorrow.
"We'll sit down today and make some decisions."
