Halifax Reserves 18 Widnes 42: A game too far for Fax kids

THIS was simply a game too far for a team that had long exceeded even their own expectations this season.
A slick Widnes side, aided by a hefty penalty count and the sin binnings of Andy Bowman and Ben Insley that left Halifax down to 11 men at one stage of the second half, took the First Division Grand Final in ultimately comfortable fashion.
Fax were still in the game at 30-18 with half an hour remaining, but a disallowed try from young prop Tom Guinan, who was pulled up for a double movement, proved crucial as the visitors - fielding a clutch of players on the fringes of the Vikings' National League line up - scored twice late in the game to seal victory.
But while the pain of defeat was written all over Fax's youthful line up, there was no sense of despair.
Even before yesterday, Karl Fairbank's team, cobbled together at the turn of the year from a mishmash of untried locals, union converts and the odd survivor of the title-winning sides of the last two seasons, had already guaranteed that 2008 would be recorded as a success.
Their coach said it best, admitting his players had "covered themselves in glory" simply by making it to another decider at the end of a season when they had been tipped to struggle.
"It was probably one match too many," said the former Great Britain forward, who had declined head coach Matt Calland's offer of some senior talent in favour of rewarding the players who had built such impressive momentum as the season had gone on.
"But let's give some credit to Widnes, they played really well and deserved the win.
"They were too good for us on the day."
The Vikings were certainly too good in the opening exchanges, playing with tremendous width as wingers Paddy Flynn - a try scorer at the Shay at senior level earlier this season - and Dave Kennedy put their side 8-0 up.
There were howls for a forward pass when Kennedy scored, the speedster claiming a long pass almost on the try line, but there were fewer complaints about his second, a long range interception after 20 minutes that Scott Yates goaled for a 14-0 advantage.
Fax were struggling to generate any real momentum, despite a monster effort from prop James Fairbank, but they finally made it on to the scoresheet just shy of the half hour, Graham Charlesworth slicing through after hooker Stuart Proctor's crossfield run confused the defence.
Shaun Garrod converted, but Widnes' reply was immediate, Flynn scoring again and Yates making it 20-6.
Garrod got another score back just before the break, Martyn Silcox adding his second conversion to cut the deficit to eight points, but the Vikings' fifth touchdown on the stroke of half time, scored by centre Adam Bowman and converted by Yates, gave them a commanding 26-12 lead.
Fax got the perfect start to the second period, Andy Bowman finishing well after neat approach work from Proctor, but a mistake from the kick off gifted Widnes another score for substitute Ryan McPaul leaving Fax still chasing a 12-point deficit.
They never gave up, Guinan going so close, but Widnes weathered the storm comfortably in the end, with back rower Dayne Donoghue and Bowman rounding off the scoring.
