IF Sky allocate coverage on entertainment value, Halifax are likely to be playing every Thursday between now and the end of the season.
In 80 incident filled, rollercoaster minutes at the Shay last night, they managed to pack in more drama than some clubs manage in a season.
There was some typically outstanding attacking play; a major new signing in the shape of Warrington hooker Mark Gleeson; a hat trick of serious injuries that saw them play out the closing stages with 12 men; a pretty fair attempt at sporting suicide; and, ultimately, some outstanding, gutsy defence that finally saw off a Leigh side who were threatening to do to Fax what Fax had done to them at Hilton Park earlier this season.
The fact they returned to the top of National League One, at least until Salford travel to struggling Dewsbury on Sunday, seems almost incidental.
To say it was breathless would be something of an understatement.
Matt Calland's side, starved of coverage all year, had been intent from the start on making the most of their big chance on the small screen.
They came out of the blocks like a scalded cat, and led 12-0 inside the opening eight minutes with a brilliant brace of touchdowns.
James Haley set the ball rolling by taking Graham Holroyd's trademark short kick off, and within a minute Fax were in on the right, Shad Royston setting Haley free and the young winger doing superbly, throwing the pass back inside for the onrushing Paul Smith to score.
Holroyd goaled, and when Smith and Haley tore another gaping hole in the Centurions defensive line, Fax worked the ball back to the left where Ben Black's perfectly judged kick was scooped up in front of the posts by a flying Miles Greenwood.
Holroyd goaled and added a penalty soon after for 14-0 and, with Leigh being ripped to shreds, it seemed only a matter of time before Fax scored again.
A brilliant move just after quarter time should have ended with a penalty at the very least after Greenwood was blatantly hauled back without the ball, but the myopic combination of whistler Gareth Hewer and video official Thierry Alibert somehow conspired to dig Leigh out of that particular hole.
Black's chip and chase on half way might have brought more reward too, before Fax finally bagged their third try of the night.
Again, it was the outstanding Smith who did the initial damage, only for Sean Penkywicz's inside ball to end up in the hands of Ian Watson, a teammate last year but not this.
Haley showed real strength though, dragging the half back over the sideline to give Fax a scrum feed 40 metres out.
They didn't waste it either, Holroyd and Greenwood working their regular ploy, the full back looping round the back to score the try and the stand off kicking the conversion for 20-0.
Hooker Dave McConnell, Leigh's best player all night, grabbed a close range try just before the break, Lee Marsh's goal cutting the deficit to 20-6, but even then there were no alarm bells ringing.
And when Haley slid in from Smith's pass 12 minutes into the second period, after both sides had made an error strewn opening, Fax looked in complete control at 24-6.
Greenwood had already limped off by that point though, and with Hewer hammering Fax 9-2 at one stage in the penalty count, Calland's players spent the next 10 minutes camped on their own goal line.
They held out easily enough, only for disaster to strike the second they got the ball back, Penkywicz's ambitious long ball out to the left bouncing around widly before sitting up nicely for Lee Doran to touchdown.
Marsh converted, and with David Larder and Jon Goddard both leaving the field never to return as a result of injuries sustained in the same incident, the home side suddenly had a bit of a makeshift look about it.
Worse was to follow as McConnell popped up in midfield to make it back to back tries for the visitors, Marsh kicking Leigh within a score at 24-18.
Doran lost the ball on the line soon after, and with Dana Wilson also out of action by now, sheer volume of possession played a big part in Marsh's try nine minutes from time.
Watson lined up the conversion that would have tied the scores about 10 metres in from touch, but the ball drifted just to the left of the uprights.
That was the break Fax needed.
Calland admitted afterwards he always thought they would get another scoring chance, and so it proved.
Smith, unsurprisingly, was the 'go to' man, helping send Haley away and the winger kicking the ball back inside.
Shad Royston's chase piled on the pressure, and when Aaron Smith failed to clear up, Penkywicz was on hand to dive on the loose ball.
Holroyd goaled for Calland's short-handed side, opening the eight point gap to kill Leigh's comeback.
A couple of penalties later, Fax were home and hosed, but will probably wake up today wondering how they managed to make such hard work of it.

STAR MAN
You will need to go a long way and watch an awful lot of rugby league to find a clearer cut man of the match decision than this one.
Paul Smith wasn't just Halifax's best player last night. He was the best on the field too. By a country mile.
The rangy back rower is in a rich vein of form at the moment and was at his best again against Leigh, with and without the ball.
Smith scored one of his side's five tries, and had a hand, to some extent or other, in the other four.
Influential? Oh yes.
He was great in defence too, hitting hard and hitting fair on a night when Fax conceded far too many penalties.
James Haley has gone back to the future in recent weeks, trading his centre shirt for the wing berth where he started his first grade career.
And he has certainly solved Matt Calland's main selection problem this year, who to play on the right flank?
Haley was in top form last night, from the moment he soared above the opposition to take Holroyd's opening kick off.
Like Smith, he grabbed a score himself, and, like Smith, he had a hand in the others too.
The former Ovenden junior is so solid in defence too, and when he does miss his man - as he did once last night on David Alstead - he scrambles back with real tenacity.
Full back Miles Greenwood takes the final point in the season long Star Man competition, even though he was only on the field for 45 minutes.
Greenwood's running game caused his former employers all sorts of problems in the first half, and, judging by the searing break that kicked off the second period, would have continued to do so.
Certainly, the terrace doubters who spent the early season jeering the 20-year-old are now conspicuous only by their absence.

helyg you can not blame the ref he did ok it was halifax forcing stupid passes that got leigh back in the game when will they learn to take a tackle and stop forcing the pass.also the disapline was not too good from both teams.

Amazed at some comments about the Referee. Last night was a rare visit to watch Fax and I wasn't too impressed. The niggling indiscipline that saw a stream of penalties has to be eradicated and a defence found from somewhere if they are to win anything.

So somebody who has registered themselves on this forum as anti calderdale society actually went to watch Fax, and decided to post negative comments about the game.

No surprise there then.

A C S we are all biased about our own team, the indicipline was allowed to go on from minuite one and the count against us was a joke the ref could not make a decision on his own

The referee was a joke.

ACS is a wind up merchant. Don't get sucked in by his trolling!

Yeah we did make hard work of it, but we have to give these other teams a fighting chance, don't we?

We were getting penlalised for infringements that Leigh were comitting all night and not getting penalised for.

I cannot work out the logic of the disallowed try where Greenwood was held back. Cant go to video for a forward pass.

Great defence from Fax, despite conceding 4 tries. We had no ball all night.

Fantastic game and win! - Our speed and skill levels are amazing and teams are really nervous of us - the only thing that annoyed me was Sky's terrible two Terry and Barry - they never priased Halifax for winning it was all about Leigh being off form and coming back strong - What Rubbish - dont come back turkeys
