NEW centre signing Jon Goddard and winger Lee Patterson both touched down twice as Halifax eased into their Northern Rail Cup campaign with a classy, composed win over Workington at Derwent Park.
Matt Calland's new-look line up, who only returned from their warm weather training camp in Lanzarote on Thursday night, defied an enthusiastic home side and a gale force wind to run out easy winners.
Goddard, the former Hull KR centre, was passed fit on Saturday after recovering from the knee ligament damage that had delayed his debut and struck once in each half to underline his quality.
With Patterson following suit, notching the first and last of Fax's six tries, and new backline recruits Andy Smith and Mike Ratu both posting powerful performances, the visitors comfortably outpointed their National League Two hosts.
While Fax looked impressive going forward though, especially considering the appalling conditions, it was the defence that will have pleased the coach the most.
The home side struggled to make headway all afternoon in the face of an organised, aggressive Fax rearguard, and scored their solitary try off their only line break of the game.
Town, playing with the hurricane at their backs, had taken the early lead through the boot of Carl Forber, but Fax hit the front inside six minutes when Graham Holroyd found the perfect weight on his kick and Patterson pounced for the opening try.
Holroyd slipped - or got blown over - as he attempted the conversion, but with a 4-2 lead, the visitors began to look increasingly threatening in attack.
They were unfortunate not to add to their tally as the end of the first quarter approached, Shad Royston being recalled for a forward pass, a ruling that defied the laws of physics considering the gale that was whipping down the pitch.
Ratu was held on his back over the line soon after, with Paul Smith and skipper Sean Penkywicz both being grounded short as Fax piled on the pressure.
The Town defence finally cracked a minute short of the half hour, Ratu and Frank Watene both finding offloads, Mick Govin whipping the ball to the left and Holroyd and Patterson engineering a walk in for Goddard.
Fax should have been further ahead within four minutes of the second half restart, the ball just slipping from Paul Smith's fingertips as he sliced through from Paul Southern's sweetly timed pass.
Against all the odds though, Town were level within seconds, centre Mark Routledge storming over after a brilliant offload from back rower Dexter Miller, Forber adding the extras.
Fax's answer was immediate, harrying Town on the last tackle.
Penkywicz's tenacity eventually forced the error from substitute Franco Kmet 10 metres from the home try line and Govin profited a couple of tackles later, plunging between the markers for his side's third score.
Holroyd goaled for a 14-8 lead, and Town were reduced to 12 men soon after, prop Matthew Tunstall getting 10 minutes after attempting to trip Southern.
Royston then gave Fax breathing space for the first time, chiming into the line to score off Dana Wilson's short offload, before Goddard sped over on the left flank for a 24-8 scoreline.
Workington finished the game a man short after Rob Lunt also received a yellow card, this time for attempting to delay the restart, and Patterson deservedly had the last word, racing over from Holroyd's cut out pass.
Fax's veteran stand off then produced arguably the play of the day, bending over a miraculous wind-assisted conversion from the touchline to set the seal on a solid start to 2008.

STARMAN

Halifax's bolstered backline showed signs of real promise at Derwent Park yesterday afternoon.
Jon Goddard and Lee Patterson were both in try scoring form, but it was probably a player who didn't make it over the whitewash who made the biggest impression.
Former Bradford and Harlequins flanker Andy Smith was signed for his bulldozing ability and he showed why on the windswept Cumbrian coast.
Time and again, Smith battered through Town's midfield, setting the perfect platform for Fax to attack from and picking up the first three point haul in the season-long Star Man competition.
If the giant speedster can continue in the same vein, coach Matt Calland will have secured a genuinely influential recruit.
Mick Govin's mooted move to loose forward was knocked on the head by the injury sustained by hooker Sam Hoare on Saturday morning.
But the former Leigh man wasted no time in staking his claim for the hooking role with a typically dynamic performance.
Govin scored a crucial try, looked sharp going forward and defended strongly.
The final point goes to prop Paul Southern, who picked up where he left off in 2007.
Southern's footwork and skill picked him up plenty of metres yesterday, with the former Rochdale and Salford player the pick of a dominant pack.
