York City Knights 12 Halifax 34: Patterson gets back to back hat tricks
A SCORCHING hat trick of tries from wingman Lee Patterson, his second successive treble, ensured Halifax will go into the hat for Thursday night's fourth round Challenge Cup draw.
The former Rochdale player has now scored seven tries in his last two games, following a four try haul in the 88-6 battering of Workington last weekend.
At a cold, windswept Huntington Stadium, Patterson's finishing prowess ensured that Fax merely rested a toe on the potential banana skin that was a youthful, and incredibly enthusiastic, York side, before striding away to victory.
Patterson scored twice in the opening 14 minutes as Matt Calland's visitors opened up a 12-0 lead and, to be truthful, from then on the result never, ever looked in question.
That said, the opening quarter aside, this was an afternoon where Fax got by with perspiration rather than the inspiration that has served them so spectacularly well in recent weeks.
The pack, despite a battering-ram performance from on-loan Bradford Bulls prop Craig Kopczak, struggled to impose themselves, depriving half backs Graham Holroyd and Sean Penkywicz of the space they craved.
Fax weren't helped by York's impromptu narrowing of their already tiny pitch, but too often the visitors, almost understandably given their apparent invulnerability in recent weeks, cut their own throats by trying to be too fancy with the ball.
Sometimes it worked, more often it didn't, but it was still difficult to escape the impression that Fax were a juggernaut stuck in second gear rather than a transit van going full throttle.
They had certainly started well, with just three minutes on the clock when Fax struck from deep inside their own half.
Penkywicz's sly pass gave Holroyd room to move, before classic support play from David Larder and a fine piece of vision from Jon Goddard sent Patterson cutting inside to score a fine try.
Holroyd converted and was on target again just before the quarter hour when Fax's other in-form wingman, Andy Smith, ripped clear down the right, found the supporting Miles Greenwood and the loose forward lofted a perfect pass inside for Patterson to cross under the posts.
Fax were over again on 18 minutes, Holroyd and Shad Royston combining superbly to send Larder bullocking his way to within a couple of feet of the whitewash, and a lightning fast play the ball and Goddard's strength doing the rest as the centre forced his way over.
Holroyd's conversion attempt drifted wide to leave Fax 16-0 up, a lead which should have stretched by at least another four points when Andy Smith barrelled over in the corner, only for Mike Ratu's final pass to be called forward.
York then made the most of a rare foray into opposition territory, loose forward David March supplying a fine flick pass for his former Wakefield teammate Mark Applegarth to touch down.
Stand off Danny Ratcliffe was unable to convert, but the Knights were in again just past the half hour, former York Acorn flyer Johnny Waldron slipping outside Patterson and away down the sideline to score.
Ratcliffe was again wide of the mark, and Fax reasserted their authority with a try on the stroke of half time, Holroyd's clever in goal grubber kick sitting up perfectly for Mick Govin to score, Holroyd kicking his side 22-8 ahead.
York predictably hurled everything but the dressing room sink at their visitors in the minutes immediately before the interval, but the closest they came to scoring was when Andy Smith was forced to knock the ball down on Fax's right as the home side looked to engineer an overlap.
The gulf in class was then emphasised at the other end, where Penkywicz ripped through for his side's fifth try and a 28-8 lead.
Larder should have got his name on the scoresheet as the final quarter loomed, the second rower crossing after an intricate runaround, only for referee Gareth Hewer to find a forward pass.
Fittingly, it was Patterson who completed the scoring for Fax, showing fine instincts to complete an equally fine individual performance.
York had the last word, replacement Steve Grundy sneaking over between Govin and Andy Smith, leaving Fax in the next round but with plenty of food for thought.
STARMAN
Yesterday was scheduled to have been Craig Kopczak's final game on loan from Bradford Bulls.
But the fact the Bulls allowed Fax to cup tie the young forward at least holds out the promise the arrangement might be renewed before Matt Calland takes his side to Whitehaven next weekend.
Whether he stays or goes though, Kopczak has enhanced his reputation considerably.
From the moment he entered the fray yesterday, he hit harder, ran harder and looked generally more threatening, in both attack and defence, than any of his more experienced front row colleagues.
He also played longer, ending up doing nearly an hour in the engine room, underlining his solid contribution over the last month or so, and earning him three points in the season long Star Man competition.
Fax have two very different wingmen at the moment; Lee Patterson scoring the tries and Andy Smith making the hard yards.
Both are in fine form, with Patterson's hat trick yesterday, his second in two games, getting him two points.
Patterson's combination with the hugely gifted Jon Goddard looks more lethal by the game, with the wingman's pace and support play sharpening Fax's attacking edge.
Patterson will not be looking forward to seeing York's Johnny Waldron zip past him when Fax settle down for their video session this week, but that should hardly detract from an otherwise fine performance.
Smith takes the final point, with another powerpacked display of industry on the opposite flank.
Basically, every time Smith drove the ball in he did damage, whether it was on the edges or in the middle of the field.
