RHYS Morgan was left to reflect on yet another home game that got away from his Halifax side following the 20-11 reversal against Cambridge.
Halifax looked a different proposition to the dejected group that had trooped from the field at Manchester a week earlier as, in the first half particularly, they played with plenty of pride and purpose.
However, after establishing an 11-5 platform at the break, they allowed Cambridge to wrestle the initiative from them and forge on for the win.
It could have been closer had Dave Hall not faltered following a superb break from his own half, denying himself a certain try that would have brought Halifax a losing bonus point.
The atrocious conditions did not help the game as a spectacle yet Halifax could have no complaints on that score having failed to take advantage of the elements during the first half when they were in the ascendency
"I thought the effort in the first half, man for man, was fantastic," said Morgan. "It was a great performance although we didn't use the wind well enough in my opinion.
"Of our first three kicks, two went straight out and one was played into their hands which was disappointing.
"It is something we have worked on but there is still obviously work to be done.
"But it was a typical scenario. We played well and restricted a massive Cambridge pack then conceded a try right at the end which made the score look worse than it was
"Even then we had a great chance through Dave Hall. Maybe if he had kept going rather than come inside then it would have ended in a try and certainly given us some respectibility as far as the scoreboard was concerned."
One area that did please Morgan was the one on one tackling which has been something of an Achilles heel for Halifax.
"I told the players that I would be watching the dvd from this game very carefully and I would pin every missed tackle on the board," added Morgan
"Maybe it was the fear of being named and shamed or maybe it was the realisation that it hasn't been good enough which prompted a massive improvement.
"At times it has let us down and it has been a weakness, definitely.
"But against Cambridge it was outstanding and in the most difficult of conditions when you are more likely to slide off a tackle, especially when you are playing against a big team, you really can expect to miss a few."
Both sides battled manfully in monsoon conditions that were the worst experienced at Ovenden Park - or anywhere else - this season.
"That was the Halifax I remember as boy," said Morgan. "Some of the Cambridge players had their photographs taken out on the pitch because it was the first time they had seen that amount of water!
"It was a shame because I know Cambridge like to play an expansive game and there was no way that was going to happen."
Despite feeling the disappointment of another home defeat, Morgan firmly believes that Halifax have at least one win in them in the final three games of the season.
"It was great to have Richard White back because that allowed us to release Richard Brown to the back row and move Gareth Lewis back to flanker and with that combination we proved we have got strength and talent in the squad," added Morgan.
"This was not our day, it has not been our season and we have lost at home again, but obviously there was a lot of pride this time on the back of the Manchester defeat
"On the positive side we will have Dominic Moon and Matty Harrison coming back and although it will be a tough trip to Blackheath I am sure we can earn that win that we desire so much if not in that game then against either Waterloo or Wharfedale."
