RHYS Morgan refuted claims that his side lacked basic fitness in the aftermath of Saturday's humbling 57-13 home defeat by a rampant Leicester Lions side.
Halifax blew up in spectacular fashion after the break following a first half when they finally showed that they are able to compete against the best National Three (North) has had to offer so far.
But while Leicester seemed to have energy to spare in the rare summer heat, Halifax were a spent force before the hour and conceded 40 points in a tortuous second half session.
They were not helped by yellow cards to Iain Gordon and Oli Marns – a worrying trend that has seen Halifax yet to play an entire match with a full complement – moments of indiscipline that have cost them dearly.
"Some people have questioned our fitness but I firmly refute that," said Morgan, following a long post-match reflection on yet another disappointing defeat
"These people should come up to training on a Tuesday and see just how hard these boys work.
"But you can only get people fit that are here. Players have, to a certain extent, got to take some responsibility in how they conduct themselves away from the club.
"There have been times when we have nine players missing because at the end of the day they are not professional players, they have jobs and we have to accommodate that.
"But it wasn't about fitness, it was about being ground down. Against a team who had so much possession you are tackling, tackling, tackling and it will always catch up with you in the end.
"They had a lot of gas and they exploited that. When we were ragged we were easy to get round, but when we were solid they couldn't get past us."
Morgan was disappointed that such a promising first half was allowed to go to waste, but is backing his players to rediscover their confidence and produce the goods for the full 80 minutes.
"I was very proud and pleased by the effort the players put in during the first half against a very good Leicester Lions side who have already shown this season that they are going to be a force to be reckoned with," he said.
"We really took the game to them in the first half, but the problem was that once we cracked, we really cracked. Gaps appeared and they exploited our weaknesses.
"We certainly aren't giving up. We have a good team spirit, we have good players and we will work through this together.
"You have to just carry on digging away. It's never easy and it is soul-destroying – my week is the longest week in the world until we are able to have a go again next Saturday.
"That was the best 40 minutes of the season so far but we have to work hard to replicate that for a full game and if we can do that then we have a fighting chance."
The fact that Halifax once again fell foul of the referee was also an area of concern with Morgan adding: "Each game we're picking up yellow cards, but a lot of it is down to sheer frustration.
"And again we come down to the question of fitness because if you're having to cover for a guy that is off the field then of course you're going to use more energy and the good teams will kill you.
"Of course it is a worry and we are going to have to look at that, see where we are going wrong and takes steps to address it."
