OF all the signings made by Rhys Morgan during the close season, the capture of prop Paul Turner was the one that made people sit up and take notice.
After all, it was only at the end of last season that Turner was helping Yorkshire to County Championship success over Devon at Twickenham.
At that time he was a member of the Otley squad that had swept all before them in a swift return to National One.
However, he had mainly been used from the bench and with the prospect of regular rugby union in the offing at Halifax he made the decision to make the short hop from Cross Green to Ovenden Park.
"I think I could have continued playing at a higher level but at this stage I am looking to get more game time," said the 26-year-old forward.
"Coming to Halifax is the right move at the right time for me.
"The coach at Otley, Peter Clegg, was always pleased with me and the work I put in but he would always go for his strongest front row.
"I had worked my way up through the various set-ups at Cleckheaton and achieved some success there. At that time I wanted to see if I could play at a higher level and joined Otley.
"In the first year I was first choice and playing good rugby but in the second year I had to play a lot from the bench and the second team because they brought in a few old heads to bolster up the pack
"The prop game is always an experience game so I was always behind the lads that were 30 years old and had been playing a lot longer than I had."
By his own admission, Turner came to rugby late but has made significant strides since then.
"I was 15 or 16 when I started which is quite late compared to some," he said.
Turner is one of a number of players who have Halifax forwards coach Dave Harrison to thank for bringing them to the club.
And he is relishing working with the former Heath skipper again after benefiting from his coaching skills in the past
"Harry and John Bentley brought a lot of success to Cleckheaton and I was involved in that as well," added Turner.
"Harry knew that I hadn't played much rugby last season and he got in touch to see if I fancied coming down to Halifax.
"It is very good for me to come down here and train with him because he is very good at reading your game and developing you as a player.
"At Otley you always had to come with your best game, but Harry always finds the time to help your development and tell you which areas you need to work on.
"I am also wanting to expand my options so I can cover the tight-head position as well so that if there are injury problems I can play either position. I certainly don't want to be spending time sitting back on the bench again."
Turner's agreeing to sign was also a major plus as far as Harrison was concerned, who said: "Bringing Paul to the club is a massive signing for Halifax.
"He is a proven performer and a county prop.
"His signing will have raised a few eyebrows and it is real credit to the club that we can attract a player of his calibre."
Turner has settled into his new surroundings and is confident Halifax can have a good season.
"I have played three seasons at this level and against many of the teams that are still in this league so I have a good idea of what to expect," he said.
"I'd like to think we can make this place a fortress and give it real protection.
"We will be looking to dominate teams. Any side that comes down here will know they have been to Halifax
"We are starting to gel as a squad. At first players, particularly those new to the club, tend to try and show their skills and what they can do.
"But the experienced guys here have brought everybody together and the early signs are really positive."
