Halifax were trailing 12-7 in the second half at Blackheath last Saturday with the home side pressing the visitors' line.
But they spilled the ball and quick as a flash Halifax full back Joe Knowles latched on to it and set off up the pitch.
The Cheshire county player has pace to burn yet there were still a couple of moments when he looked as though he might get tagged before he reached his goal.
But as the pursuers gave up one by one, Knowles was left to swallow dive in between the Blackheath sticks, then add the conversion to edge Halifax ahead at 14-12.
He had already converted an earlier Matt Harrison try and then added a later penalty to give Halifax a 17-12 lead entering the dying minutes.
But, in keeping with this National Two season, it was another false dawn as Blackheath added a try then a late, late penalty to steal the verdict.
"It was a sickening way to lose because I thought we were the better team," said a disappointed Knowles.
"To be honest I thought we had the game won right up to the last minute. Even when they went 20-17 up I thought we were going to pull away again.
"But I do think we will pick up another win before the end of the season - Waterloo or Wharfedale, we'll take either."
Asked what was going through his mind when he picked the ball up and set off for the Blackheath line, Knowles added: "Just to make sure I kept hold of the ball and didn't get caught - that was it"
Knowles was in no doubt that Halifax's torrid campaign was the reason they just missed out on a victory.
However, he believes there is the nucleus of a good team at Ovenden Park and although he is still to decide where his future lies, Knowles believes the fantastic cameraderie among the players will inspire them to better things next time around.
"The difference between the two teams was that they have been used to winning games this season and we are in a losing rut," said Knowles.
"I think if it had been the other way around we would have beaten them comfortably.
"But we proved what great spirit there is at the club and that spirit has pulled us through.
"They are just a great set of lads. It's absolutely brilliant. We have never let things get us down - we are still having a laugh and taking the mickey out of each other. It is just a happy place to be
"A lot of teams would have crumbled by now and morale would have gone.
"We are here getting beaten week in and week out yet the lads are still turning out and going again."
"The other thing is that we are such a young team and if we stick together we could do well and be back in this division again soon.
"I haven't decided for certain where I'll be next season yet. I have spoken to other clubs but nothing has happened as yet. I would certainly have no qualms about staying at Halifax, I really love being around the place.
"I wasn't enjoying my rugby and then I came here and started enjoying it again. I have a lot of favours to repay in that respect."
Knowles is Halifax's top points scorer this season - something he feels justifiably proud about
"I have scored a lot of points but not too many tries," he said. "But it's like the saying about buses - you don't see any all season and then two come at once.
"I've been happy with my kicking but I also have pride in my game and know there is still room to improve."
