Huddersfield v Halifax RUFC: Emmerson takes long way home

CRAIG Emmerson never had any doubts that he would arrive back at Ovenden Park in the twilight of his career.
So, it was no surprise to see him roll up for pre-season training looking as focused as ever and ready for yet another challenge.
It is 20 years since he first started out with Halifax under 17s and his career has turned full circle after taking in stints at Leeds, Gloucester, Harlequins, West Hartlepool and Morley.
And despite looking ahead to his 37th birthday tomorrow, Emmerson has lost none of the hunger that also helped him earn representative honours with England Colts and the North of England.
"I would have liked to have stayed at Morley, but it was always my intention to come back and finish my career at Halifax," said Emmerson, who refused to say just when he intends hanging up his boots.
"But, to be honest, I wasn't really enjoying it much over there because I had been injured and had not played that much rugby.
"When the opportunity to come back to Halifax came up I jumped at it. I have been associated with Halifax for 20 years and while I love all the clubs I have been at, Halifax is still the main one for me.
"I was upset when they were relegated from National Two and I wanted to help the club and try to make sure we don't suffer relegation again.
"It is important that we consolidate now and stay in this league."
That sense of loyalty is admirable - a quality Emmerson shares with fellow back Oli Marns - and it is a policy he feels the squad have to adopt if they are to hold their own in a very competitive league.
"I am back and I am ready to put my body on the line for Halifax," added Emmerson.
"You have to enter every game with that in mind and not worry about getting injured.
"You have to be committed and that is the ethos we have to breed.
"Even when we had the likes of Carl Mortimer, Joe Bartlett and Richard Hill, who were from South Yorkshire, they played as if they just lived around the corner.
"That is what made the team and the spirit so good and we have to build that up again.
"It's good that Dave Harrison is involved because he is a local lad and very passionate about his rugby.
"He is doing some excellent work with the forwards and I think everybody has a lot of respect for him."
Emmerson admitted that his fitness was not what it once was, but he was looking forward to being involved when work commitments allowed.
However, he also said that he would be happy to support from the sidelines if he was being kept out of the side.
"I would love it because that would mean a younger, better player was coming through and that is all you can ask when you're involved with a club," said Emmerson.
"I missed the first game against Preston because of a wedding and was disappointed about that.
"I am hoping to be involved in some capacity at Huddersfield, whether it is starting or from the bench, and I am ready for the challenge.
"Last week was not the best way to start a season but unfortunately the club have got used to losing games and that is something we have to turn round.
"I hope it is this week because I'm not going to lose at Huddersfield.
"They aren't a bad team, but I don't think we are either.
"We have plenty of size and power in the forwards and I think the conditions will suit them because the pitch is bound to be very heavy.
"The key will be to get hold of the ball and use it sensibly and not waste energy."
