HALIFAX RUFC new boy Josh Cammiss was already a familiar figure in Calderdale rugby union circles before signing on at Ovenden Park during the summer.
The 22-year-old lock has been working in Halifax as an RFU community coach where his job involved bringing the game to youngsters in schools and youth clubs.
And although he is soon to leave to take up a similar role in his native Manchester, Cammiss knew enough about the club to realise that joining Rhys Morgan's ranks would provide a decent challenge for his playing ambitions.
Cammiss was also given chapter and verse by skipper Danny McGee when the pair worked together as community coaches at Sale Sharks.
"I had just finished my Sports Science degree at Manchester Met University when I went on a six month work placement at Sale Sharks," said Cammiss.
"That's when I first found out about Halifax through Danny McGee.
"After my placement finished I came to Halifax, working for the RFU as community coach for Calderdale and Kirklees, so I was aware of the club and what was happening here."
The fact that Halifax had suffered relegation from National Two did not deter Cammiss, who said that he was looking forward to the challenge of pressing his claims for a regular first team place.
He has also been impressed by the attitude of the players and coaching staff and fully expects Halifax to have a good season.
"I knew the club had been relegated which was a real shame after they had done so well to reach National Two," added Cammiss, who played colts rugby at Winnington Park before joining Altrincham Kersal.
"I have been at clubs where they are happy to stay where they are and play social rugby. I spoke to the coaching staff and was impressed by their commitment to the club and their desire to keep taking it forward.
"On a personal level, my goal has to be to make sure I am in that first team. I know Rhys has brought other second rowers in, but that is another reason why the challenge was so attractive, because I relish the competition.
"It can only be good because it means I will have to improve to play at their level."
And on his long-term plans, Cammiss added: I would like to think I can achieve a good, steady career in the National Leagues.
"I have played through juniors, county and colts rugby, but I like the national structure - I like the fact that you are always striving to improve.
"When you play Academy rugby it is almost as though you just turn up and play and that's it whereas here you have targets and you can set your own goals.
"They are also a good set of lads.
"It is quite a small squad so the team spirit is excellent which is something you don't always get if you are part of a larger group of players.
"Everybody seems to trust each other's abilities to do the job."
