BOSS Jim Vince will run the rule over a number of trialists in Tuesday's pre-season friendly at Blue Square Conference North side Alfreton Town (7.45).
Although Vince has assembled a decent core of players from a standing start, the former Witton supremo wants to make sure nobody slips through the net before his FC Halifax Town side kick off their Unibond League First Division North campaign at home to Bamber Bridge on August 16.

His desire to bring in the players to match his and the club's ambition means that there will be tough choices on the way and Vince has already indicated that a number of the players that turned out in the 2-0 win over Alsager Town on Saturday would not be retained.

"Saturday was always about looking at players and for me it was a very useful exercise in that respect," said Vince.

"The squad is starting to really take shape but we need to make sure we concentrate on getting the right people in.

"Seven of the players that played at the weekend will not be involved tonight. That does not make them bad players, it just means they are not right for Halifax.

"It is never a good idea to make enemies in football so instead of hanging on to these players, we have to let them go and let them try their luck elsewhere because otherwise it is not fair on them as individuals."

Only four players who turned out at Alsager, Phil Senior, Thomas Harban, Joe Brown and Liam Smith can consider themselves embedded in Vince's plans.

"All the players I bring in have to match my ambition," he said. "I am here to win things and we cannot afford to carry people who only want to make up the numbers.

"The squad is coming together now and I am very pleased with the progress we have been making.

"These next three weeks should see that morph into a squad producing the kind of football I expect

"Having said that these next three weeks mean nothing to a certain extent; it is what we do on the first day of the season that counts."

Vince's side are certain to face a tough test against a side managed by former Bradford City boss Nicky Law.

The Alfreton squad boast a number of ex-league players and included striker Leo Fortune West in their ranks during last weekend's 1-1 draw at Staveley Miners Welfare.

SUPPORTERS wishing to travel to the pre-season friendly at Ashton on Saturday can book places on the coach that leaves the Weavers car park at 1pm.

The cost is £11 and anybody wishing to book should contact the traveline on 07707 143094
