BOSS Jim Vince admitted he gave his players 'both barrels' at half time in Town's 3-1 win over Chorley at the Shay.
And the treatment worked as the Shaymen came from a goal down to move three points clear of the field at the top of Unibond One North.
Town trailed to an Adam Crossley strike at the break after a poor opening 45 minutes.
But they hit back in style to put daylight between themselves and the chasing pack thanks to goals from Ashley Stott, Paul Gedman and skipper Tony Barras.
"I was very, very disappointed and the players had double barrels at half time," said Vince. "It was unacceptable.
"The way we played was poor and I am not having that.
"They redeemed themselves in the second half, but only just.
"We played on Saturday like we did in the first month of the season when the players thought that if they put a shirt on they would win the game.
"You cannot do that.
"The players went up a couple of gears in the second half but there was not much of a difference needed for them to be better.
"We wanted to put the ball in the final third and keep it there because we knew if we did that things would happen.
"Fortunately we got a penalty, fortunately we scored a second and fortunately we got a third."
Having gone top of the table the previous week at Woodley Sports, Vince called for his team to be relentless in their pursuit of points.
And he admitted the biggest job was to make sure the players did not sit back on their laurels.
"There is a winning mentality in the team, but it is my job to make sure that we don't take things for granted," he said.
"We cherish being top of the league and I aim to be there for some time, but we have to work harder.
"Confident and complacent go hand in hand. You can be both.
"You have to focus on doing your job and it is my job to ensure that happens."
Vince handed a debut on Saturday to new loan signing Ajay Leitch-Smith who only arrived from League One Crewe on Friday afternoon.
"The way Chorley set up was with two banks of four and we found it difficult to penetrate," said Vince.
"When Ajay tried to find the space he couldn't because he was being closed down.
"I stretched the play in the second half and it seemed to work.
"When Ajay went up top he looked far better but it was his first game and it will take a little time for him to get used to how we play."
Tom Baker is already a doubt for next weekend's game at Rossendale after having stitches inserted in a leg wound late in Saturday's game
"Tom has had a few stitches popped into gash in his knee," said Vince. "He didn't want to come off, but sometimes you have to."
