BOSS Jim Vince always felt his FC Halifax Town side were going to progress to the third round of the Unibond League Cup despite requiring extra time to beat Sheffield 3-1 at the Shay last night.
Junior Brown came off the bench to level the game with eight minutes of normal time remaining after the visitors had gone ahead early in the second half.
And strikes from Danny Ellis in the 114th minute and Ashley Stott three minutes later ensured penalties were not required.
"I thought it took us a long time to get going," said Vince who watched a large part of the game from the back of the main stand.
"We were looking to do things well but couldn't get into the swing of things.
"In the second half we played a lot better and but for some good goalkeeping we could quite easily have won the game in 90 minutes.
"I thought we were much stronger than them."
Vince added that he had been impressed by Town's superior fitness which shone through later in the contest.
"Alan Russell Cox and Ian Helliwell have worked with the players on fitness and we are reaping the rewards," he said. "We looked pretty fresh and Sheffield looked tired as the game wore on."
As expected, Ellis, Luke Hinsley and Kris King were all handed starts against the South Yorkshire outfit and Vince was happy with their contributions
"I was pleased with the lads who came in," he said. "Luke showed us what he is capable of and Kris had a great opportunity to score in the first half.
"He took two touches and Sheffield made the tackle. If you have an opportunity like that you take one touch and finish it.
"We do it in training and that's what Danny Ellis in extra time."
Ben Wharton's name did not appear on the teamsheet after a hitch in the potential signing of the former Rochdale striker
"There were a few registration issues," said Vince. "Unfortunately, there was baggage with it and I didn't need that.
"It was resolved but I thought it would be inappropriate to play a player who is associated with another Unibond club.
"The lad came to us, we have not approached him, but we did not want to register him because it would look bad on our club."
Kurtis Gill, who plays for North West Counties Alsager Town, made his Halifax debut last night.
Town's reward for the win is a home tie in round three against Unibond One South high flyers Retford home on December 9.
