JIM Vince remains confident that his FC Halifax Town side will be ready for the Unibond League First Division North campaign despite watching his side suffer another pre-season defeat, this time at Unibond Premier promotion hopefuls Guiseley.
He is experienced enough to know it is not going to be plain sailing and what plans he might have had as to a starting line up for the opening game against Bamber Bridge at the Shay a week on Saturday could possibly need a a re-think after a double injury blow at Nethermoor.
Returning striker Ryan Sugden picked up a thigh strain prior to kick off and his place in the starting line up was taken by Ben Jones.
Then right back Tom Harban was helped off the field with an ankle problem in an incident which saw the second of the game's two penalty misses.
"The performances of the players was what I was looking for and in some aspects of the game I thought we were better than Guiseley," said Vince.
"We have picked up a couple of injuries, but that is always going to happen.
"Ryan picked up a thigh injury before the game and Thomas has gone over on his ankle so we are looking at a couple of weeks for him."
Vince was also pleased at the way his side went about their work against a well-drilled team from a league above.
"Guiseley are a pretty strong team but we have done well and if that is an indication of the level we have achieved after only being together for three or four weeks then things are looking up for us."
The game saw two missed penalties - one for either side - and Vince was left to rue the opportunity that got away after Dorryl Proffitt had been upended.
"It was a good opportunity and we should be capitalising on them," added Vince.
"Fair play to Rossy, he took responsibility but he didn't do it for us. The next one he will."
Halifax took time to settle against a Guiseley outfit who featured former Shaymen Tom Morgan and Mark Whitehouse.
And in striker David Brown they had the game's most dangerous outlet as his pace caused no end of problems to the Halifax back four.
But skipper Tony Barrass showed all his years of experience to remain a towering presence while striker Neil Ross worked hard along with midfield duo Proffitt and Justin Walker.
Junior Brown also showed good feet, once he had managed to find them, on a surface made greasy by light rain during the early stages.
Both sides were prepared to play football and as action swung from end to end, David Brown lifted a shot over Phil Senior's crossbar while, at the other end, Junior Brown and Gavin Rothery were unable to find proper connection's after Kris King's cross had caused problems.
Junior Brown was denied at his feet by Guiseley keeper Piotr Skiba and Barrass's searching crossfield ball was hammered wide by Proffitt.
Halifax ended the half strongly and should have gone ahead when Proffitt went over in the box under the lightest of challenges but Skiba was equal to Ross's spot kick, diving to his right to push the ball away.
Halifax started the second half as they had ended the first with Junior Brown bursting into the box only to see his shot well-saved.
Ross fired a snap shot over the bar as Halifax looked the more likely to break the deadlock.
Then the balance swung in Guiseley's favour, courtesy of another soft penalty award, Harban bringing down the lively Whitehouse and injuring himself in the process.
Brown stepped up but this time Senior covered himself in glory, producing an almost identical save to Skiba's to keep the game goalless.
Both sides rang the changes with Vince giving the travelling support a first sighting of new recruit Ashley Stott.
And while he showed pace to burn, he found his chances to have a pop at goal severely limited by the well-organised home defence.
Guiseley again began to exert some control over the proceedings and gained their reward midway through the half.
A long ball belted out of defence was seized upon by the pint-sized Brown and after taking the ball round substitute keeper Craig Mawson he stroked the ball home for a classy finish.
Halifax continued to work hard but were unable to foce a meaningful shot on goal in the closing stages while Guiseley were content to knock the ball about although David Brown did go close to grabbing a second goal for the home side at the death only to flash his shot across the face of goal.
