Halifax Town 0 v Stafford Rangers 0: Town fail to take chances

HAVING called for his side to keep a clean sheet – and seen them achieve it - it was almost inevitable that Chris Wilder's Town side would fire blanks in attack.
It has been that kind of a season.
It is true to say that Stafford were not the most adventurous away team to be seen at the Shay in recent months.
But they always kept two men up and anything they could muster was easily diffused by Halifax's new-look back four.
In attack themselves, Town had more than enough chances to have wrapped up the game with something to spare.
Their problem was a combination of poor quality delivery into the box, some disappointing finishing, the woodwork and Rangers keeper Danny Alcock.
Simon Heslop gave an early show of intent with a 25-yarder that Alcock saved down to his right.
But it was not until the 17th minute when Matt Doughty and Jon Shaw combined that Craig Nelthorpe had the first real chance when he beat a defender before firing in a powerful shot that just cleared the bar.
Two minutes later Doughty crossed for Nathan Joynes who nodded down and Shaw's shot on the turn was tipped over the bar.
Tom Kearney's left foot effort from the edge of the area lacked the power to trouble the keeper and Joynes's downward header, from a Kearney corner, went wide.
Town were unfortunate just past the half hour mark following the best move of the half which saw Nelthorpe slip past three defenders before finding Shaw.
He laid the ball back for Heslop whose thunderous shot was screaming towards goal when it struck a defender and was eventually cleared.
Stafford did not have a single shot on goal in the first half while Town had one further chance before the break.
Heslop's crossfield pass picked out Nelthorpe who aimed a cross towards the near post but Wayne Daniel got in front of Shaw to clear.
As they had in the first half, Town took time to get into their stride but when they did they should have had a penalty.
It was in the 57th minute when Gareth Davies crossed from the right and Shaw was clearly tugged to the ground by Daniel.
The Town man had no reason to go down and raced after the referee to make his point, but the official was unmoved.
Two minutes later Heslop laid a free kick wide to Nelthorpe on the left and his cross was met by Adam Quinn who headed narrowly wide.
Damien Jarrett had the honour of having Stafford's first attempt on goal – in the 61st minute.
But play was soon back at the other end with substitutes Lewis Killeen and Andy Campbell combining to send Shaw into the area.
He drew the keeper and slid the ball under him only to see it rebound back into play off the post.
Two minutes later, from a Nelthorpe corner on the right, Tom Clarke headed goalwards but Alcock leapt to tip it over the bar.
Nelthorpe swapped passes with Kearney before unleashing a left-foot shot and Heslop had another effort deflected wide after Nelthorpe, Kearney and Killeen had combined in the build up.
Campbell headed a Nelthorpe free kick wide before Kearney's shot on the volley was claimed by the keeper at the second attempt.
Town continued to commit players forward but were almost caught with a sucker punch with 10 minutes remaining when Matt Hazley's corner from the right bounced across the edge of their six-yard box.
But they responded positively and when Quinn flicked on a Kearney corner, Campbell struck only for Alcock to divert the shot over.
Adam Legzdins, a spectator for much of the game, was finally called into action in the 85th minute when he saved comfortably from Kevin Street.
But Town were unable to muster any further chances as the game petered out to a frustrating anti-climax.
STAR SHAYMAN
It is not uncommon for players making their debuts to catch the eye.
And loan centre back Tom Clarke certainly did just that with an assured display in the heart of the Town defence.
The former Sowerby Bridge youngster only arrived at the Shay on Friday.
But the Huddersfield Town defender looked like he had been here all season as he slotted in next to Adam Quinn.
His tackles were perfectly timed, he rarely wasted a pass and almost scored a debut goal, only being denied by Danny Alcock's fingertip save.
Simon Heslop again tried everything he could to get the Shaymen moving in the right direction, which they were for much of the 90 minutes.
He looked to set the tone with a shot ater just 15 seconds and continued to drive Town forward at every opportunity.
Matt Doughty likes nothing more than getting forward and linking with the strikeforce.
And he had plenty of opportunities to do just that against Stafford.
He was heavily involved in many of the good things Town came up with down the left as they searched, ultimately in vain, for a breakthrough.
Clarke takes the three points on offer in our season long competition with Heslop taking two and Doughty one.
