MARK Whitehouse became an instant Shay hero, bagging a goal 10 minutes from time to earn Town a thoroughly deserved share of the spoils.
This was a breathless Yorkshire derby packed with skilful football, goalmouth action and 100 per cent commitment from both sides.

See the slide show from the game

Nathan Joynes bagged his first goal since becoming a full-time Town player in the January transfer window, powering a header past City keeper Thomas Evans.
And Whitehouse, who scored six nights earlier at the Shay for Ossett Albion, finished with the coolness of a player who had been popping in crucial goals all his life.
Town launched wave after wave of attack, especially in the second half when they were all over the visitors.
And the only disappointment was the way the Shaymen gifted the Minstermen a couple of goals on a night that was always going to be tight.
Town showed their intent early on, but shots from Jon Shaw and Joynes failed to trouble Evans.
And for all Halifax's good approach play, it was City who had the best opportunities in the opening quarter.
Leo Fortune-West, still going strong at 36, failed to hit the target from the left hand corner of the six-yard box when he latched onto a Nicky Wroe cross and Onome Sodje's downward header, in front of the South Stand, bounced into the ground and over Adam Legzdins' goal.
In between, Evans held onto Simon Heslop's dipping 25-yarder.
Town eventually broke the deadlock in the 27th minute after Shaw had been brought down on the right.
Skipper Tom Kearney's free kick was perfect and Joynes's leap was just as good as he headed the ball into the back of the net.
The Shaymen's joy was shortlived as City responded six minutes later with an all too familiar looking equaliser.
Anthony Griffith cleared a free kick towards halfway where Stuart Elliott was waiting to send it straight back.
Sodje reacted quickest and slid the ball under the body of the advancing Legzdins.
Town finished the first half well and threatened to regain the lead on the stroke of half time, but Joynes headed a Matt Doughty cross just wide of the target.
And they continued to be the better side with Heslop, whose every touch is understandably greeted with cries of 'shoot' from the crowd, in the thick of it.
His 48th minute speculator was deflected wide of goal for a corner and when Craig Nelthorpe's ball in from the right was cleared to the Town midfielder he knocked David McGurk over with another ferocious effort.
Moments later Joynes intercepted a wayward York pass but when the ball eventually arrived to Nelthorpe on the left he crossed when a shot might have been more damaging and City survived.
There was a spell when Town looked like they wanted to walk the ball into the back of the net when they might have had a dig earlier in the move.
And for all their dominance, they found themselves training with 19 minutes remaining.
The referee spotted a Kearney foul in back play when York were attacking down the left and blew for a free kick.
The four man defensive wall lined up but proved inadequate as Martyn Woolford curled a left foot shot round it and into the net.
Just as Town had failed to hold onto their lead in the first half, City were unable to do it in the second.
And just 10 minutes after joining the action Whitehouse made his mark.
He pounced on a poor defensive pass and jinked round a couple of defenders before drawing the keeper and firing home in front of the home fans.
That was not the end of the action as York threatened a third goal with a minute remaining as Craig Farrell broke down the left only to see his shot loop over the bar off a Tom Harban block.
And the Shaymen looked like they might snatch it in injury time from a superb Heslop through ball, but Andy Campbell was inches away from nicking it round the keeper for a clear run on goal.

STARMAN:
It was a such a fluid game that you were never surprised to see any player pop up anywhere on the pitch.
And Simon Heslop led the way with a powerful display as he covered every grain of sand.
He was perpetual motion, especially in the second half when the Shaymen were surging forward and three times York defenders felt the full force of his thunderous shots.
Alongside him in midfield Anthony Griffith was back to his combative best.
It may have teken a game or two to get there, but he was snapping into the challenges with real conviction, winning the back and setting Town on their way in attack.
Jon Shaw may not have scored, but his workrate is always to be admired.
Countless times he closed down defenders, winning throw ins in attacking positions and he was always available for a teammate's pass.
Heslop takes the three points on offer in our season-long competition with Griffith taking two and Shaw one.
