Histon 1 Halifax Town 3: Town storm to away win
AS away performances go, Town's at Histon was close to perfect given both the conditions and the style of play of the opposition.
The Shaymen took advantage of playing with a strong wind at their backs in the first half to go two-up at the break thanks to first goals in Halifax colours for Tom Clarke and Gareth Davies.
And they broke from defence to devastating effect eight minutes into the second half when Anthony Griffith made it 3-0.
Histon, whose tactics are the closest thing to rugby union you are likely to see on a football field - kick for the corners to win a throw and send up the big men to muscle the ball over the line - pulled one back.
But the three man central defence of Adam Quinn, Clarke and Jake Wright, which raised some eyebrows when it was announced, coped magnificently.
Town would have expected to have been put under pressure from the off by a Histon side who had eyes on climbing to seventh in the table, and they were not disappointed.
Adrian Cambridge's first long throw into the Halifax box came after just 25 seconds and both Quinn and keeper Adam Legzdins were left nursing blows to their heads in the early stages.
Legzdins showed no ill effects as he saved instinctively from a Davies touch when he tried to deal with Gareth Gwillim's free kick in the sixth minute.
But despite the continuing aerial bombardment, Town were able to keep the home side at bay.
They almost broke the deadlock in the 15th minute but Simon Heslop's 30-yarder was saved superbly by Danny Naisbitt and when Griffith and Davies worked the rebound wide for Danny Forrest, his shot went over off the bar.
Davies sent a low shot into the side netting, again with the help of a touch from Naisbitt, before Town went ahead after 32 minutes.
Griffith won the initial corner which was headed behind by Histon, but Matt Doughty's second delivery was perfect for Clarke who powered a header into the top corner.
Jon Shaw had an effort saved before helping create the opening for Town's second in the 37th minute.
He was picked out by Heslop on the left and sent the ball towards the edge of the Histon six-yard area. Nathaniel Wright-Percival swung a foot at it and missed, allowing Davies to adjust his feet and fire home.
Danny Wright headed over for the home side before the break and Legzdins claimed a Histon free kick early in the second half.
And it was from defence that they struck for a third time in the 53rd minute when Heslop strode forward down the middle of the pitch before picking out Forrest on the right. He played it in for Griffith whose initial shot was blocked, but he made no mistake from the rebound, stroking home with his left foot.
Heslop had a shot blocked soon after but it was Histon who turned up the heat for a short spell, Wright clearing a Cambridge corner before Antonio Murray hammered a 30-yard effort from the right into the top corner of Legzdins' goal.
The Town keeper saved well from Danny Wright, who managed to work his way into the area on the right, and Jon Kennedy had an effort blocked as the home side pushed for a second.
But Town continued to carve out opportunities of their own. Griffith broke from midfield before finding Shaw on the edge of the area but his right foot shot went over the bar and when Forrest took a return pass from Heslop he saw his effort deflect behind for a corner.
Andy Campbell replaced Forrest late on and continued the good work, running the channels and causing the home defence problems.
He almost picked out Griffith inside the area as the Shaymen surged forward again and Shaw was denied a late chance when he raced clear in the dying minutes only to be brought back for a foul on Griffith after he had played the ball through.
STAR SHAYMAN
Tom Clarke has made a real impact since arriving at Halifax on loan from Huddersfield and raised it another notch at Histon.
Superb in defence in the most difficult of circumstances, he also bagged the all-important goal when he headed home just past the half-hour mark.
Clarke's presence has also helped his new teammates. Both Adam Quinn and Jake Wright were in fine form alongside him at the back.
Quinn recovered superbly from an early blow to the head and an unfortunate yellow card to help diffuse the home side's aerial assault on the Town goal.
On a day that appeared designed to eliminate midfield play, Anthony Griffith managed to make his mark.
He helped drive the Shaymen forward, won the tackles he needed to and scored the third goal of the game early in the second half which must have sent the confidence surging through the Town players' veins.
Clarke takes the three points on offer in our season-long competition with Quinn claiming two and Griffith one.
