But the new look starting line-up was still strong enough to beat their hosts 4-3 - a fourth successive victory - and progress to a second round clash with Sheffield FC.

Three of his recent signings - Danny Ellis, Scott Phelan and Anthony Hilton - started the game while Miles Smith featured in the final half hour.

And Vince was pleased with the way the quartet performed.

"There were phases of play when we looked disjointed, but that was expected," he said.

"Some did well and some didn't.

"The sole purpose last night was to have a look at players and see who is good enough to play for us.

"Questions were answered and decisions will be made.

"I thought there were some really good performances.

"Danny Ellis is a very exciting player. He just needs to be more positive in his approach and not pass on responsibility.

"I was getting him to drive at the full back and commit him. If we can get that into his game he's a good player.

"Scott Phelan was excellent so there were two very good plusses out of the game.

"Anthony Hilton did well and young Miles Smith did okay when he came on."

Danny Davidson struck twice, with newcomer Ellis and veteran Nigel Jemson also on target as the Shaymen progressed.

"Danny did extremely well," said Vince. "But Ryan Sugden did not do as well as I had anticipated.

"He has not played for a while and his hold up play wasn't great.

"Young Danny came on and scored two really good goals.

"To concede three goals was not very good and Phil Senior did not do very well on the first, but made up for it at the end with a couple of excellent saves.

"Fair play to him, he did well, but we knew he would.

"Adam Morning did well. He showed a bit of skill and had a hand in the first three goals."

Lincoln Adams, who with Steve Payne survived from the weekend win, ended the game in pain after suffering a muscle strain, but Vince is hopeful he will be recover in time for Saturday's FA Cup second qualifying round trip to Unibond Premier Division Nantwich.
