A CAMERA is to be trained on the Shay stadium 24 hours a day so the public can monitor progress on the £4.5 million redevelopment of the East Stand.
The search is on for a suitable vantage point and a camera that can withstand winter weather and still beam pictures on to the internet.

Council leader Stephen Baines said: "People will be able to watch a community stadium appear in front of their very eyes."

Contractors began work on site last month but it is likely to be next October before the stand is completed with seats, toilets, hospitality boxes and a banqueting room.

"We hope to have the camera up and running as the physical work starts and we will be releasing further information in the next week or so," said Coun Baines (Con, Northowram and Shelf).

Tim Barrick, the business development manager for Hall Construction, which is carrying out the work, said he could not see any problems with having a camera on site although a lot of the work would be fairly unexciting.

He added: "It is the first time I have heard of this sort of thing for a sports ground.

"We did something similar on a project in Middlesbrough but that involved a new digital entertainment centre."

The camera is expected to show the removal of the roof of the East Stand, the work to create the hospitality space, a new control room and classrooms which will be used by Calderdale College and Leeds University. It should also be possible to watch the demolition of The Weavers bar after Christmas and the installation of new turnstiles and sports club shops.

The old East Stand was pulled down in 2000 and work on its replacement ground to a halt soon after, leaving it only half finished.

"We want to keep fans and members of the public fully informed as work progresses," said Coun Baines.
