JON Shaw admitted he was 'amazed' by the show of support from Halifax Town fans at England's clash with Wales on Saturday.
Around 150 - one-tenth of last season's average home crowd - travelled to Rhyl to see Shaw help England to a 3-0 win over the Welsh and clinch the Four Nations title.

And the supporters, there as a show of defiance during tough times for the club, spent much of the 90 minutes chanting for their beleagured team and last season's star striker who came off the bench to play the last 25 minutes and earn his fourth cap.

"At times I might have been seen blushing in the dugout," said Shaw, whose name was chanted every time he popped his head out. "But it was absolutely amazing.

"After what has gone off at the club over the past few weeks to see so many fans come down here and fighting my corner was incredible."

Town's fans are still waiting for firm news on what the future holds for the club.

And Shaw said that the players - whether their contracts expire at the end of June or in a further 12 months time - were in the same situation.

"When we went in a few weeks ago were told the club was possibly going into liquidation," he said.

"And that was where we left it.

"Everyone thought that as players we would possibly be out of a job.

"Things are now coming out here and there and the club is going into this league or that league depending on what you read.

"The players under contract know no more than the next man so it has all been a bit of a worry."

Shaw, who will be linking up with the England squad again later this week as they jet off on a short tour of the West Indies, almost gave the travelling fans the perfect present but his last-minute header flashed inches wide of goal.

"No one was more surprised or disappointed than me that it did not go in," he said.

"To have got a goal with the last touch of the last game of the tournament would have been fantastic but I got just too much on the header after a good run and a good cross.

"But It has been a good season for me and to top it off by spending a week training and playing with people at the top of the game at our standard has been great."
