Oxford United 1 Halifax Town 1
TOWN picked up their first away point of the season as they came from behind to claim a draw at the Kassam Stadium.
But few could disagree with the fact that they probably deserved all three points after a performance equally as impressive as they one against Droylsden at the Shay five days earlier.
Halifax moved the ball quickly and carved out some excellent opportunities against an Oxford side who were among the pre-season title favourites.
And, apart from a 10-minute spell after the break when the home side looked like they were building up a head of steam, they dominated possession.
Remarkably, having not been awarded a penalty at all last season, the Shaymen got their second in a week against Jim Smith's side.
And Steve Torpey made no mistake from the spot just five minutes after going on as a substitute.
So impressive were Town that Oxford had just three clearcut chances in the opening 45 minutes.
Rob Duffy headed over the top on a couple of occasions, first from a Carl Pettefer cross then from a Barry Quinn flick, while Phil Trainer fired a long range effort just over the top of Craig Mawson's goal.
Town showed their intentions from the start, forcing the first corner of the match after just 26 seconds with Cortez Belle heading over from Tom Kearney's delivery.
Lewis Killeen's left-foot shot nine minutes later failed to trouble Billy Turley in the Oxford goal, but Killeen was involved in the build up with Kearney that gave Matt Doughty the chance to cross soon after which saw Jon Shaw volley wide at the far post.
Town continued to prosper down both flanks and they almost got the breakthrough on the half hour after a great pass from Andy Campbell released Shaw down the middle.
The Town new boy moved into the area before putting the ball through Turley's legs, but Michael Corcoran got back to clear the danger.
And Shaw almost broke the deadlock in first half injury time after another Doughty delivery from the left, but the striker's glancing header bounced across the face of goal and wide of the far post.
Town started the second half as they had the first, by forcing a corner inside the opening 60 seconds.
But they were rocked back on their heels in the 51st minute with an Oxford goal that came completely out of the blue.
Turley's long ball from the edge of his own area was flicked on by Paul Shaw and Rob Duffy nipped in between the Town centre backs before firing past Mawson.
That signalled a brief period of Oxford pressure as the home side threatened to take control of the game.
Trainer volleyed over an Alex Jeannin corner from six yards, Duffy narrowly failed to get onto the end of another long ball and Paul Shaw missed the target from the edge of the area.
Oxford then had the ball in the net for a second time but their skipper Barry Quinn was penalised for a foul on Mawson as he leapt for the ball.
Town steadied the ship and started to regain the upper hand with more neat passing and they got their reward with 18 minutes of the game remaining.
Campbell picked up the ball on the left and cut in towards the area. His surging run continued into the box and was only halted when he was brought down by Corcoran. The referee pointed straight to the spot and Torpey struck the ball home coolly into the side netting to Turley's left.
Town then went for the winner and, after Jake Wright and Torpey had combined on the left, Campbell pulled the ball back for Lewis Killeen whose left foot shot slid agonisingly wide.
And when Turley missed another Campbell cross moments later, Killeen was just short of connecting at the far post.
Given Oxford's record of being awarded late penalties since they arrived in the division 13 months ago, they always remained a threat.
And in the fourth minute of injury time Yemi Odubade threw himself to the floor inside the Town area, but the referee stayed strong and, quite correctly, dismissed the home side's claims for a potentially match-winning spot kick.

STAR SHAYMAN
It would be an interesting experiment to attach some kind of measuring device to Andy Campbell during a match.
That way there would be a definitive answer to the mileage the striker covers in a game.
He had a hand in both of the chances created for Jon Shaw in the first half and it was his surging run with 18 minutes remaining that led to the penalty as the Oxford defence were forced to bring him down.
Anthony Griffith grew in stature in his home debut against Droylsden and he continued that form into the game at the Kassam Stadium.
He was relentless in his no nonsense approach to breaking up anything Oxford tried to create in the middle of the park.
He is the man to break up play and look to start the forward movement.
Having only met up with his new teammates 24 hours before kick off, ex-Burton striker Shaw settled into the Town side well.
He linked superbly with Campbell and with a little more luck in the area he could even have marked his Halifax debut with a goal in the first half.
Campbell takes the three points on offer in the season-long competition, with Griffith two and Shaw one
