Two for Shaw in Town stroll

Halifax Town 3 - Northwich Vics 1
TOWN scored three goals, probably should have had six and could even have had more, it was that easy at the Shay last night.
Perhaps in the end it was too easy and two from Jon Shaw late in the first half and a third from Lewis Killeen not long after the break put Halifax in complete control.
It was job done after 48 minutes and the players appeared to coast home to an inevitable three points.
It was not good to watch as for long spells of the second half, Town got sloppy.
But it was a minor complaint as the Shaymen bounced back from their Friday night defeat at Torquay.
The first half was a different matter, as Town created a raft of great opportunities only to come up against an inspired keeper in Ben Connett.
At times it was Halifax against Connett as he pulled off save after save to keep his side in the contest.
The die was cast in only the second minute when Shaw and Andy Campbell cut open the visitors down the right, creating the chance for Killeen to send in a shot, but his side-footed effort was saved.
Five minutes later, as the Vics failed to deal with a Steve Torpey free kick, Shaw sent the ball goalwards and Adam Quinn got a touch only to be denied by Connett.
Northwich's response was a header from caretaker boss Paul Warhurst that failed to hit the target and a Dino Maamria effort blocked by Jake Wright.
Back at the other end, Ryan Toulson's well struck shot rebounded wide for a corner and when Campbell picked out Killeen on the right his cross found Shaw who headed down, but wide, from eight yards.
Ryan Brown forced a save from Craig Mawson just before the half hour and it looked like being a frustrating evening for the home fans.
But two goals in a four minute spell put the Shaymen in the driving seat.
Killeen's 34th minute pass opened the way for the first as it found Campbell racing through the middle.
His initial shot was, inevitably, saved by Connett, but Shaw was waiting for the rebound and kept his cool before firing home.
Then, Kevin Sharp's weak back pass was pounced on by Shaw who nicked the ball round the helpless keeper and rolled it into the empty net.
Town ought to have been further ahead before the break but were twice denied by some scrambling Northwich defending.
Campbell went on a great 39th-minute run before finding Killeen whose shot was saved. Anthony Griffith then saw his shot from the rebound deflected behind for a corner.
Three minutes later Connett saved from Torpey with former Shayman Greg Strong sliding in to prevent Campbell forcing home.
Having been caught cold at the start of the second half of several games in recent weeks, Town needed to be out of the blocks quickly after the break.
And they were.
Wright's cross from the left, which Shaw narrowly failed to convert, was put out for a Town throw in.
Toulson launched the ball into the area, Shaw chested it into Killeen's path and he blasted in from 10 yards.
That was game over.
Unfortunately the players knew it and with Northwich, who had nothing to lose, throwing more and more strikers on, the visitors started to create a chance or two of their own.
Sub Michael Byrne was prominent, but it was Michael Coulson who pulled a goal back in the 65th minute when, following a misplaced pass from the back, he was allowed too much space and fired home from 15 yards.
Within three minutes, Tom Kearney did well to block a Byrne shot from a half cleared Northwich corner and soon after Mawson collected a Warhurst header.
Despite Town's apparent lethargy, that was the extent of the Vics' threat and it was the home side that finished the stronger.
Toulson's ball forward picked out Campbell in the 83rd minute but again Connett was equal to the shot and turned it round a post.
A minute later, Killeen cut in from his new position on the left only to pull a right foot shot wide of the near post.
And in injury time Shaw had the chance to complete his hat-trick when he got away on the left. He lifted his shot over Connett but it bounced wide.
STAR SHAYMAN
Jon Shaw has really made his mark since arriving at Halifax from Burton Albion on transfer deadline day.
His double last night took his tally to five in five games and with a little more luck in front of goal he might have had more.
He also chested the ball down for Lewis Killeen to make the game completely safe early in the second half and takes the three points on offer in our season long competition.
Killeen was not far behind the striker.
He had a hand in Shaw's opening goal and was pivotal in many of Town's first half moves that created chances.
At the back, Jake Wright had another impressive evening at left back.
Seldom flustered, he did well to block Dino Maamria in the first half and got forward well whenever the opportunity arose.
