But despite the dizzying heights of the summit, boss Jim Vince is keeping his feet firmly on the ground after experiencing disappointment in the last two campaigns with Witton.
An Ashley Stott double and a Levi Kennedy own goal during a 20 minute spell before the break earned the Shaymen a 3-2 win.
And they now head the pack on goal difference from Bamber Bridge who won 2-0 at Newcastle Blue Star.
"I have lost top spot in each of the last two seasons on the last day," said Vince. "I have led the season for six months.
"All we want to do is keep winning games and that is what we will endeavour to do.
"We have got a chance. We have gone over the two points a game average now.
"Over the past month we have beaten teams in the higher reaches.
"We have had some fortune, played some good football and shown discipline.
"If we are top at the end of the season, that will do."
The manager's caution was well placed after he had watched his side win despite only playing really well for one-quarter of the game.
But rather than the pitch causing Town's players problems it was the strong wind blowing from end to end which made life difficult.
"It took us 20 minutes to get into the game but for me it was the wind," said Vince.
"It was difficult and they put a lot of pressure on us.
"As soon as we got the ball on the floor and started to play we opened them up.
"For 20 minutes before half time we played in the right areas - but it was difficult to get the ball into the right areas."
Stott's double took his tally for the season to 13 goals, but Vince, who hailed the performance of Jon Smith, is expecting more from the striker.
"In last 20 minutes of the first half his movement was better," said the Town boss.
"But in the second period his hold up play and angles to receive the ball saw him going back to his old habits.
"I was not happy with the second half performance and I told the players.
"But you cannot be too harsh because we have done enough to win the game.
"I thought Jon Smith was terrific. He has taken some flak and I have been his worst critic because I want him to be better.
"But he showed some nice touches on Saturday. I was very pleased for him."
FORMER Rochdale striker Ben Wharton is to be handed a chance by FC Halifax Town.
The 18-year-old ex-Stockport County trainee warmed up with the Town players ahead of Saturday's game at Woodley and watched the game from the sidelines.
