ROSS McFadyen, James Mason, Gareth Hey and James Foster produced scintillating table tennis in the final stages of the top 16 Junior Masters held at Halifax Table Tennis Centre.
Number two seed McFadyen emerged triumphant in the end, producing a fine display of clever serving and consistent looping coupled with a high work rate.

His three games to one victory over number one seed Mason had the spectators on their feet with rapturous applause at the many long fast hitting rallies. Mason's flat hitting style almost took the match to a fifth game by establishing parity at nine all in the fourth, but McFadyen's composure just held out to take the spoils.

Both players endured mighty close scares in the semi-finals as first Hey opened up a two game lead over Mason before the maestro from Shelf finally hit through a previously resolute defence and counter hit strategy from Hey.

McFadyen too was pushed all the way by Foster in semi final number two. Indeed Foster produced the shot of the night hitting through a splendid cross court loop shot from McFadyen straight off the bounce with a forehand winner down the line. Many more high level power exchanges were to follow before McFadyen's early attack game plan paid dividends.

Foster is two years younger than McFadyen and his semi-final appearance was achieved with a splendid 14-12 win in the fifth round over the experienced Matthew Shaw. The latter had reached the final of the Blackpool Open Junior event a week earlier.

Mason and McFadyen are certainly in contention for Junior County Honours, while Shaw and Hey will be determined to do well at the Yorkshire trials.

The Plate competition for those players ranked outside the top 16 was won by number two seed Robert Jones with a 3-1 victory over number one seed Hannah Kendall.
