A 50th birthday to remember

Orchestra of Square Chapel Maestro's Choice Square Chapel, Halifax Orchestra of Square Chapel conductor Law-rence Killian celebrated his 50th birthday with some of his favourite music from 20th-century France – those evocative painters in sound Francis Poulenc and Maurice Ravel.

Poulenc's Sinfonietta, premiered in 1947, is characteristically full of sweet, melodic lines, witty decoration, with an underlying melancholy, all captured with great delicacy.

Lawrence Killian's daughter Sarah was the persuasive soprano soloist in Ravel's Sheherazade. She characterised these three poems by Tristan Klingsor beautifully, Asie exotic and beguiling, La Flute Enchantee seductive and creepy with some exquisitely refined flute playing from Stuart Coldwell.

Sixth-former William Green was the soloist for Ravel's demanding Piano Concerto in G Minor, premiered in 1932. From the scintillating glissandi and spiky, almost jazzy chording of the mercurial first movement, the drowsy trills of the adagio assai to the featherlight presto, this was a truly sensational performance.

Lawrence Killian's enjoyable Ted Hughes Suite ingeniously evoked the poet's passions and griefs and the sounds of nature which inspired him.
