'Allo 'Allo: Oooh René, we're just as good as ever!

'Allo 'Allo The Victoria Theatre, Halifax

From 1982 to 1992, 85 episodes of 'Allo 'Allo, written by Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft, delighted television viewers all round the world – including Germany.

How does a stage play by the same writers featuring the original mix of farce, national stereotypes and "funny" foreign accents, catchphrases, double entendres, innuendo, wordplay and almost innocent naughtiness go down in this age of easily offended sensibilities and political correctness?

Very well indeed if the obvious laugh-out-loud enjoyment of the audience was anything to go by.

Cafe owner Ren Artois is still trying to accommodate the machinations of the French Resistance, be nice to a motley posse of occupying Germans, juggle his complicated love life and, in this scenario, hang on to a priceless painting of a topless madonna stolen by the Nazis secreted in a sausage in the cellar where he's harbouring a pair of toffee-nosed British airmen.

The cast, which includes feisty Vicki Michelle from the TV series and Hi-De Hi's Jeffrey Holland effortlessly taking on Gorden Kaye's role as Ren, gelled brilliantly as a team, honing their comic timing to perfection.

The set and music score instantly transported us to 1940s France.

'Allo 'Allo continues until Wednesday with a matinee that afternoon as well as an evening performance.
