Buddy: Tragic story... cracking show

Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story The Victoria Theatre, Halifax

THOSE who remember the golden days of rock 'n' roll – or people who just want a good night's entertainment – will certainly like this show.

Since 1989, Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story has been delighting audiences of all ages.

It remains just as fresh and alive with extra significance this year as it's the 50th anniversary of the legendary singer-songwriter's death in a plane crash.

It's a great story with memorable music and fun in the second half during which everyone is encouraged to wear the paper Holly spectacles given out.

Glen Joseph, not exactly a Holly lookalike, played the part well with his movements, mannerisms and guitar playing on classics like That'll Be The Day, Peggy Sue, Maybe Baby and Rave On.

During the recreation of Holly's last concert at Clear Lake, Iowa, there are realistic performances by Colin McGregor as The Big Bopper (Chantilly Lace), and a hip-gyrating Pedro Reichart as Ritchie Valens (La Bamba).

The Bopper and Valens also perished in the crash and, after their deaths are described with just a lone guitar on stage, all the cast returns for a rock 'n' roll finale with live musicians who double up in other parts.

Holly's widow, Maria Elena, now 76, had a premonition of the crash and pleaded with him not to go on the ill-fated Winter Dance Party tour after his split with The Crickets. She is played in the production by Carla Freeman.

A moving moment comes when Buddy sings True Love Ways to his pregnant wife before setting off on the tour.

The show runs until Saturday.
