Calderdale dancers' cracking good show
ONE hundred children, including some Calderdale dancers, will take to the stage in Halifax tonight and tomorrow with the English Youth Ballet.
The renowned company makes its debut visit to the Victoria Theatre and will present The Nutcracker (7.30pm tonight and tomorrow, with a 2.30pm matinee tomorrow).
As part of its desire to take ballet to a wider audience and link up with young talent in different regions, it held auditions at the theatre in March and 100 children from in and around Calderdale were chosen to take part in the production. Halifax dancer Sophie Griffin, 16, a student at Whiteleys' Academy of Performing Arts in the town, is taking one of the leading roles, Clara. The Nutcracker tells the story of Clara's dream of the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Nutcracker Prince.
Theatre marketing officer Emma Booth says: "Set to Tchaikovsky's mesmerising masterpiece, it is one of the most popular and enchanting ballets ever performed and the production by the English Youth Ballet promises to be truly spectacular with new costumes and sets."
Sophie has achieved a three-year scholarship at the Northern Ballet School, Manchester, and will be starting in September.
Other dancers chosen to perform include: Grace Whittaker, eight; Emily Blowers, 10; Samara Clarke, nine; Reay Clarke, 13 and Rebecca Corina, 11 (all of Whiteleys); Ellie Wilson, 10; Zoe Finelli, 11; Chloe Byrnes, 12 (Strickland Cook Theatre School); Josef Jagger, nine; Stephanie Murphy, nine; Georgie Conway, 13; Ellen Pinder, 13; Gerard White, nine and Eve Collett, 12 (Jane Elizabeth School of Ballet); Lauren Gordon, 14, of Spotlight Stage School and Dorothy Stevens School of Dance; Molly Greenwood, 10, of Abigail Warburton Stage School; and Megan Hampshire, 10, of Helen Wilman School of Dance.
