Classic spine-tingler
Turn of the Screw Hebden Bridge Little Theatre
HEBDEN Bridge Little Theatre is to blame for the plunging temperatures, thanks to this chilling interpretation of Henry James's ghoulish thriller.
When Miss Grey accepts a position to look after two children, her employer insists he hands over full control of the magnificent house as well as the children.
Is there a catch? Not half: it comes in the ghostly shape of Mrs Jessel, the former governess who, although deceased, remains defiantly resident together with her ectoplasmic boyfriend, Peter Quint.
The pair stalk the place to scare off our heroine and lure the youngsters to the dark side.
But why can only Miss Grey see the apparitions? The others seem oblivious. Maybe they should have gone to spectre-savers?
Collette McNulty (Flora) and George Goddard (Miles) give highly accomplished performances as cherubic children with a hint of menace.
Sarah Jane Price (Miss Grey) is faultless in the demanding lead role. A fine performance from Yvonne Collins as housekeeper Mrs Grose caps a spine-tingling production directed by Sharon Kelly.
This recommended play runs until Saturday. The children's roles are shared during the week with Lila Nicholson and Chester Howarth.
