A time to reflect on finances
AS economic turbulance shakes the country it is unsurprising to see Calderdale Council battening down the hatches and looking at a review of its management structure in an effort to save money.
Two years ago the same proposal from the Liberal Democrats ran out of steam. Now with all party backing, the likelihood is that it will go ahead.
This will not be good news for a raft of highly paid senior managers, whose jobs are clearly now under threat.
Calderdale Council has been prudent with its money over the recent years. Unlike some councils across Britain it will not be seeking inflation-busting increases in council tax. At the moment a modest 2 per cent appears to be on the cards.
But with a squeeze on finances, it will need to make serious savings if it is to continue offering the best value across a wide range of services for years to come.
Sensible financial management coupled with forward thinking of this kind can only serve the council and its electorate well in the long term.
Of course there will be losers. These may be individuals who have been in the employ of the council for many years and who have acrued significant salaries working their way up through the ranks.
However, there is no such thing as a job for life any more either on the shop floor or management corridor or in the public or private sector.
And ultimately the savings that will be made will be for the good of the majority.
