A tropical look for our district

Visitors to Calderdale might be forgiven for thinking they are seeing things this summer.

That the region has been mysteriously transported to the tropics.

Or that global warming really has taken more of a grip than we thought.

In this experiment, more than 200 dwarf banana plants will displayed on roundabouts, parks and other green spaces from June. Apparently they grow to around three feet high.

But before you start thinking anyone has gone, well erm ... bananas, this plant, normally associated with far warmer countries, is well suited to the climate here.

And, unlike many other exotic plants, it is resistant to frost, said estates manager Paul Marshall.

"We are always looking for plants that are a bit different," he added.

Which shows every year in the hugely creative displays he and his hard-working colleagues produce.

There is, however, one drawback. The variety does not produce fruit.

Which will come as a disappointment to the gardening fraternity. Though probably not to greengrocers.
