AFC Halifax enjoy moment of glory

IT is not unusual these days when you go to a football match for the team you are going to watch differ considerably from the one that appears in the matchday programme.

But Newcastle Blue Star excelled themselves at the weekend by printing not the FC Halifax Town side but the AFC Halifax team, the supporters' side that has done so well this season.

Quite how the mix-up happened is a mystery - not even the AFC players seemed to know.

I can understand the mistake to a degree, after all, how many of us knew what the Newcastle side would be when they came to the Shay?

However, the programme editor might have smelled a rat when he read the accompanying pen pictures of the 'FC Halifax Town' players.

They included a goalkeeper with 'a great range of chat up lines', a midfielder who 'doubles up as Burton Albion's match day mascot' and a striker who 'has been injured for five seasons so far and is a bit of a girl'.

I know this is Unibond One North but you would have assumed the Shaymen could do better!

Perhaps the confusion arose because AFC Halifax were sponsoring the game at Kingston Park.

Their presence helped swell the home gate to 512, a real change from the usual 120 or so who get swallowed up by the 10,500-capacity stadium.

The Tynesiders have done well to assemble such a decent side on such meagre resources.

England in world cup win shock.

The women's cricket team are the world champions in question after beating New Zealand in a nervy final.

And from the highlights of the games I saw, they fully deserved the crown.

The women's game has come on leaps and bounds from the days of Rachel Heyhoe-Flint but still needs more exposure.

It was a shame, therefore, that the tournament they won was in Australia and none of the games were played under lights meaning 11pm starts UK time and a finish in the early hours.

Perhaps they will get the publicity they deserve when the Women's World Twenty20 takes place in this country later in the summer.

I may have suggested that Manchester United's defeat at the hands of Liverpool earlier this month would not affect the title race.

I am not sure I could have been more wrong on the evidence of last weekend's Premier league action.

United were poor - even on the highlights - and ill disciplined as they tumbled to a shock defeat at Fulham on Saturday.

Liverpool were at their imperious best in demolishing Aston Villa just 24 hours later.

True, United still have a game in hand, but their lead is down to a single point and Liverpool now have a superior goal difference.

There will now be a short break for the international matches which could affect Liverpool who have certainly built up a head of steam in the past couple of weeks.

If they cope with the break, we might have an intriguing and exciting race to the title after all.
