Buckle up – it may save your life
THE Courier has been officially recognised by the police with an award for its Belt Up campaign and the part it played in helping bring about a huge reduction in the numbers of deaths and serious injuries on our roads.
In the first six months of the year there were no fatalities and only nine serious injuries among drivers in Calderdale, which is dramatically fewer than in previous years.
It is a fact that people involved in a collision are in far more danger of serious injury if they are not strapped into their vehicles.
Despite this police witnessed growing numbers of people on the roads without belts.
The Courier campaign sought to show the dangers that drivers and their passengers placed themselves in and to convince them to change their ways.
We even employed the services of a young Belt Up superhero.
However, this good news has been tempered by the numbers of passengers who still refuse to buckle up.
The reason for this is puzzling but, quite rightly, the police say they will carry out more roadside safety belt checks to try to hammer the message home.
Those who are caught face mandatory punishment. But that is really not the point.
Clicking on a seatbelt should be the first thing people do when climbing into a car. Especially when their life might be at stake.
