Bureaucracy can be halted

Like a snowball rolling down a mountain, the residents' action group responsible for preserving Rastrick Health Centre has vowed to continue fighting to get better services for the village.

And why not? Rastrick Bridge End Community Action Group is proof that the wheels of bureaucracy can be halted with the right level of public support and a little vociferous campaigning.

The victory to keep the health centre was spectacular by any standards. Plans were well advanced for it to be joined with two others in Brighouse and turned into a super-surgery based on Birds Royd Lane, Brighouse.

It successfully argued that the new centre would be too far for patients to travel, especially the old and infirm.

With victory under their belt, chairman Adrian Hartshorn and his colleagues now want to address crime issues, enhanced policing and the growing problem of lorries using the A643 through Rastrick as a rat run between motorway intersections.

"We are a group of local people who exist to give everyone a stronger voice," says Mr Hartshorn.

He, of course, is right.

Little comes from the protestations of lone voices in the dark.

However, with the weight of public opinion and the belly for a fight it is amazing exactly what can be achieved.
