Cardiss laid out on last Cas Cup trip

Daryl Cardiss earned an honourable mention here the other week.

And, with Saturday's clash at the Jungle looming, he comes to mind again as a memorable figure from Halifax's last cup-tie there.

That was on Sunday February 27, 2000 when the Blue Sox edged home 11-10 thanks to a drop goal from Andrew Dunemann which took an age to be approved by the video referee.

Cardiss was what can only be described as "wiped out" by Jamie Benn with a seeming forearm smash in the face as the Cas player chased a kick from Brad Davis over the top.

Cardiss only came round on the stretcher (he started writhing about as he was initially unaware of where he was) as he was being carried off after several minutes treatment on the pitch and was still not coherent in the dressing room or later on when he returned to sit on the bench.

It was a horrible feeling of dj-vu for physio Helen Smith who could remember Oli Marns being in a similar condition after an ugly clash with Dean Sampson less than 12 months earlier at the same ground.

The game was a triumph for Gary Mercer's new look Fax.

"Ming" had taken over from John Pendlebury the previous June after he had resigned over the circumstances surrounding the club going into its first CVA and had had a torrid time personnel wise.

But two of his signings plus a rejuvenated other player all came up trumps for him on this occasion.

Dunemann had been drifting into obscurity at South Sydney until jetting into England in July 1999 although even then it had been as a late replacement for original choice Gene Ngamu.

It took a long time for his work permit to come through and he only featured late on in the season.

He was a player who had what Mercer called "ticker" in abundance.

Greg Florimo was another Aussie who had seen a mixed 1999.

The former international had been a victim of internal politics and coaching changes at Wigan and found himself "paid off" by the Warriors but was definitely Halifax's gain.

He still drank in the same local pub in Wigan with Steve Renouf and Brett Dallas but became an inspiration at the Shay – playing in the centre!

On the wing outside him day was Jamie Bloem who helped himself to two tries and completed his rehabilitation in front of the same referee (Steve Ganson) who had sent him off for biting at Warrington the previous June.

That had led to a lengthy ban and a sojourn playing rugby union with Racing Club de Paris.

But he was back!

Matt Calland's assistant Damian Ball added another coaching achievement to his CV last week.

His Brooksbank School year 8 team have reached the National Final in their age group and earned a trip to London on Challenge Cup final weekend.

Like all successful teams they celebrated their semi-final success against Outwood from Wakefield although in their case it was with a trip to MacDonalds on the way back to Elland.

A visit which cost "Sir" a small fortune......
