Fingers are crossed for our scheme

Builders at St George's Square in Huddersfield put their down their tools as the firm behind the development went into administration.

At almost the same time 180 workers constructing Wakefield's 200 million shopping centre were sent home when bankers refused further finance for the scheme.

In Bradford work has halted on the huge city centre transformation and in Leeds the Lumiere project – to build Europe's tallest residential tower block – stopped last year.

So as the recession grips our West Yorkshire neighbours, what chance for Halifax's Broad Street centre?

It is still on course, we are told. And it would be amazing if through all the doom and gloom our own 50 million plaza could shine through and be completed against the odds.

What a fillip it would be for the up-coming Masterplan which will drive through Halifax's Renaissance dreams.

Broad Street has suffered many delays in the past. It has become a leisure development rather than retail-led and that could be its major strength.

As well as offering Halifax its much-needed cinema, a hotel chain and national bowling centre are both still keen to be involved and the scheme remains an exciting prospect.

If it goes ahead, a great deal of credit must go to Calderdale Council for its determination and enterprise to see it through.

It is a success for which the whole district yearns – and one which so much hard work deserves.
