Paying price for funding blunder

Against the backdrop of a major economic crisis it is surprising how many exciting proposals are still moving forward in Calderdale.

The Shay stadium and new swimming pools for Sowerby Bridge and Brighouse are examples of how we are trying to make progress in these difficult times. And it would be fair to expect that there will be setbacks.

But news that the proposed 50 million scheme to rebuild Calderdale College has been rejected is a bitter blow.

The new development would have provided outstanding facilities for science and technology, dance, sports and construction, and commercial-standard accommodation for students on hair and beauty, health and social care, and complementary therapy courses.

When it was first revealed the project was described as a very significant investment in the future wellbeing of Calderdale.

Yet the Learning and Skills Council now says it cannot go ahead despite all earlier signs that it would be built.

It is all the more annoying that the new college campus is the victim of what seems to be a Government blunder, which has left a 2 billion funding gap and halted plans for all but 13 of 144 college programmes nationally.

Calderdale College has been told that there will be no further decision on its ambitious proposals until 2011. All they can do now is work extra hard to make sure they cannot be turned down again then.
