Pioneering work with a reward

IT is a fact that children thrive better in smaller classes.

And you do not need a degree in rocket science to understand why.

In small groups, pupils have greater access to their teacher. The more they are engaged the better they respond and perform.

Conversely, teachers have more time to devote to their pupils from those at the top of the class to those at the bottom.

The Government has made lots of noises over the years about reducing class sizes. But the reality for many schools is that little has changed.

As a result, the danger exists that academically challenged pupils may not get the education they deserve. And worse still, they are prone to become a liability to the rest of their classmates if the situation is not remedied.

A scheme pioneered right here in Calderdale now offers a viable alternative.

It involves one-to-one tutoring for those pupils who have fallen behind in maths and English.

In Calderdale, children aged from nine to 14 were given 10 sessions with a teacher to bring them back up to standard. It worked so well the Government is now looking to attract as many as 100,000 current, former and retired qualified teachers to sign up to help pupils across Britain.

While this is not as attractive as class-size reduction, anything that helps young people achieve a better standard of education should be welcomed unreservedly.

One can only hope there is a will among teachers to take on this important work.

It is a sad fact that despite the billions thrown at the education system over the past few decades, four out of 10 children aged 12 still cannot read and write properly.

All that is required so often is a little time and attention.

The rewards of which would be seen for countless years to come.
