Satisfyinga need for their play
No sensible parent wants to wrap their children in cotton wool.
But there is nevertheless an understandable caution in 21st century Britain about simply letting our children run free to get their exercise and fun as they please.
The days are sadly gone when we could let our children – even infants – look after themselves on long summer days of cycling, football, den-bulding and pond-dipping.
Increasingly dangerous roads and our fear of predatory adults have put paid to that – along with evidence that in these troubled times even a well-behaved child can be led into trouble.
So we become ever more reliant on safe places for children to play.
And for most that will mean the local park or playground.
Which makes it excellent news that eight locally are to to share in a 1 million revamp and upgrade.
In challenging financial times it is all too easy for children's play to fall to the bottom of priority lists.
We acknowledge that ensuring our children are healthy, safe and properly-educated have to be any local council's first considerations .
But ensuring they are also happy, fulfilled and well-adjusted has to be a close second. And that means the right opportunities to play.
