Every dancer deserved a prize

Calderdale College Dance Academy Victoria Theatre, Halifax

CALDERDALE College Dance Academy is unique in offering gifted dancers between 16 and 18 the opportunity to study with ex-professional dancers alongside vocational qualifications – for free.

The combination of exceptionally talented students, taught so very well, produced a fantastic show, better, in fact, than many I've seen by professional dance companies.

From the start the sheer quality of movement impressed. Whatever the style, classical and modern ballet, contemporary, jazz, tap, it all looked effortless. Technically every student was on top of whatever choreographic demands were made, and stylistically they could dance absolutely anything with a joy matched only by that of the audience watching them.

The choreography, inspired by an eclectic and intrinsically very enjoyable collection of eminently danceable music, was constantly surprising. Fully Charged was satirical and witty, Pillow Talk dreamy and imaginative. Random was notable for some beautiful groupings, Burden and Blown for their athletic and expressive pas de deux. Belief and For You were just two of several superb solos. The complex and unusually subtle tap numbers were danced with precision and panache. Golden Pop and In My Arms were perfectly synchronised ensemble pieces. Greased Lightning and Hand Jive were irresistible fun, impeccably performed.

Prizes were distributed at the end. Every single dancer deserved one.
