Golden days on the patchwork landscape

Original paintings by Kate Lycett sell like hot cakes – so now the Hebden Bridge-based artist is preparing to market a new batch, it has become quite an occasion.

Her work is so popular that she has had to stockpile her paintings so she will have something to show at her forthcoming solo exhibition at the Calder Gallery in Hebden Bridge.

Last year Kate displayed two original paintings that sold within two hours and their rapid disappearance disappointed many of her fans. Her new show will be previewing on Tuesday at the Market Street gallery and will run until July 19.

Owners Sue Allinson and Phil Withersby urge people to attend the opening to avoid disappointment. Phil says: "Last year we sold quite a number of paintings on the preview night and customers who came in during the following weeks were disappointed at not being able to buy their favourite."

Kate paints colourful local landscapes and townscapes that incorporate patterns, stitching and gold leaf. She was inspired by Hebden Bridge when she moved to Calderdale from Sheffield three years ago and has put her experience with fabric design to good use in the way she combines images, patterns and colours to produce her trademark paintings that are being exhibited under the title The Patchwork Landscape.
