Last Night of the Proms

Halifax Symphony Orchestra, Victoria Theatre

Under the lively baton of Nicholas Simpson, the terrific Halifax Symphony Orchestra displayed their virtuosity by taking their appreciative audience on a delightful upbeat musical journey round America.

Emmerdale actor Peter Alexander, from Luddenden Foot, was our genial and informative guide, contributing much to the enjoyment of the evening.

The 20th Century Fox fanfare introduced stirring film themes , played with great feeling for mood.

The expansive theme from The Big Country evoked the Wild West before we headed inland for Somewhere Over The Rainbow, yearning and wistful.

Then to New York gangland and West Side Story, with energetic brass and crisp percussive detail pointing up the edgy drama.

Young Christopher Illing-worth with his classical and jazz background was the perfect interpreter of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, composed in 1924. Confident, fluent, yet unassuming, he made light of its tricky syncopation.

Gershwin's nimble accompanying orchestration was brilliantly played, with Lesley-Anne Pearson outstanding on clarinet.

Smooth swing from Glenn Miller and exciting Star Wars themes by John Williams featured in the second half.

Creamy strings shone in Lee Anderson's lyrical, catchy Blue Tango.

Then it was flag-waving time with Souza's rousing Stars and Stripes Forever, Elgar's Pomp and Cirumstance and New York, New York.
