Health and Beauty - The Guru: Creating a happy working team

We spend so much of our time at work and if it is a happy environment it can make a vast difference to productivity and your general wellbeing.

If you are a manager or team leader you have the power to make a difference and can make each day a pleasant or miserable experience for the people who work with you. Quite often issues can arise simply due to a lack of communication and people assume things wrongly and become bitter as a result.

Here are some tips to aid you and your team to develop a happier and more effective relationship...

Clarify the purpose of the team, make things transparent and share information. As a leader you will instil confidence if you demonstrate clearly what the objectives, the outcome and your expectations are. This will provoke greater commitment from them and achieve a productive outcome.

Understand what makes each of your team members tick and what their values are.Values determine who we are and what we do. We are unique, we each experience life differently based on our own circumstances. Our values link into our senses, our views on wealth, ambition and power, how we look and see other things, our honesty and commitment, our knowledge and life experience. When you understand these things and how they relate to each member of your team, then you are in a strong position to learn how to motivate them.

Communicate, communicate …communicate. When you lead by example and create an environment where communication is open and everyone's views are respected, you gain trust. If you can encourage your team to feedback thoughts and comments without reprimand, you can get to the root of the issues as they arise. As a manager or team leader if you fear constructive feedback or view negative comments as a personal attack on your self worth, that will be reflected throughout the team. Don't be too proud to listen as there maybe instances where you are wrong and more importantly be prepared to hold up your hand and say so. Poor team leaders are unwilling to see that they are wrong or have faults. Explain and write down what you expect of your team and why. Do so in an honest and open manner and they will do their best to meet and exceed those expectations.

Show gratitude and appreciate your team. Be grateful and demonstrate that you recognise when someone does something right. Say thank you for the simple things – working late, using initiative and doing tasks that do not fall within their job description. Little things mean a lot and people are motivated by a sense of appreciation and value. If you are not prepared to say thank you, you will not develop an effective and harmonious team, they will work with you but not with true commitment.
