Health and Beauty: The key fitness trends for 2010

IF you compare a gym floor today with that of five, 10 or even 30 years ago it is a completely different place, says Nick Hudson.

Working out used to be about machines and bodybuilding, but today it is about whole body wellness and enjoyment for the mass market. "The key fitness trends for 2010 will be about fitness that is accessible, enjoyable and fast. These trends are not just about equipment but about the modern philosophy and attitude to wellbeing", he says.

Whole body wellness

2010 will see fitness move even further away from body building and individual workouts focused on specific muscles, to a whole-body wellness. "Products such as ViPR (innovative new fitness equipment that incorporates the utility of the barbell, dumbbell, Kettlebells, stability ball, medicine ball, balance device and speed ladder) follows hot on the heels of the popular Kettlebells.

These products provide a countless number of exercises, for a whole body workout in one session by building strength, stability and cardiovascular endurance as well as engaging multiple muscle groups simultaneously" Nick added.

Accessible fitness

Fitness in 2010 will be less about fixed machine weight training and pounding the treadmills, providing more accessible training methods.

Fitness models that were previously perceived as specialist and only used by trained athletes and professionals are now moving across to the mass market. This trend will make exercise even more accessible to a wider audience. TRX suspension training, employing a set of nylon straps that are positioned to create resistance using your own body weight and gravity, and Kettlebells will lead the way.

According to Nick, "Professional gymnasts have been using the concept of suspension training for years and now everyone can have access to this great training on the gym floor."

Enjoyable fitness

Nick believes that in 2010 consumers will be seeing the fun factor in their workouts, "Exercise in general will be less about thinking and more about enjoyment. Effective exercise is no longer about complicated, technical workouts on individual muscles.

This has been proved by the popularity of dance fitness classes such as Zumba and Trixter Xdream, simulation based exercise bikes, which combine gaming and functional exercise. Time in a health club is leisure time and people will be looking to get more and more enjoyment from their workout."

Fast fitness

Today's consumer is always looking for ways to cut corners and save time from ready meals to shopping online, and exercise is no different. Any 30 minute workout that can prove to be as effective as the traditional hour will be highly successful in 2010.

Nick has highlighted the trend, "As the years go on and time becomes more precious, people are always looking for ways to workout and get results in a shorter space of time. This will feed the interest in trends such as Power Plate and Kettlebells that provide effective fitness for the body - fast."
