It's deep, powerful and can boost your immune system - a revolutionary new massage devised by a Calderdale therapist is in demand

THERE'S never been a more important time to look after your body.

As swine flu reaches pandemic proportions in the UK, medical experts are advising people to strengthen their immune systems in whatever way they can.

Many are turning to the most ancient healing therapy around, massage. Massage can help on both a physical and psychological level. It aids self-healing by encouraging the body and mind to relax and let go of tension. It also undoes knots, releases energy and can leave individuals feeling positive and on a high.

One particular form of masssage does all this and more. It's called the No Hands Massage and is the brainchild of Gerry Pyves of Hebden Bridge. Gerry, a massage therapist and psychotherapist suffered a massage injury to both his wrists and started investigating alternatives where therapists use other parts of their body.

He set up the No Hands Message Company based at Burlees House, Hebden Bridge more than 10 years ago and now runs training courses for therapists from all over the world.

Sarah Wilkinson who owns her own salon, Urban Holistics in Copley, Halifax, is one of the latest therapists to qualify in the therapy. As far as she is concerned it is the most powerful and awesome massage on the planet and some of her regular customers couldn't agree more.

"It's the deepest and most powerful massage around which is why some of my regulars, who play rugby, love it," says Sarah who has been a therapist for the past eight years and enjoys massage more than any other treatment she offers.

No Hands therapists use the soft surfaces of their forearms and sometimes their thighs during a massage. They manage to go deeper than other forms of massage because they use their whole body weight, so it works particularly well on muscular complaints and stress, but generally aids overall well-being.

It feels different to conventional massage and is often called the gentle giant of massage, this is because while it's deeper, it is also gentler, and can feel like your body is receiving a huge hug.

"Your body takes whatever it needs from it, whether it is nuturing, connection, release or a feelgood factor. It really hits the spot, says Sarah who, like other No Hands therapists, claims it is much less harsh on her body.

"I could do 10 No Hands massages a day and not feel half as bad as I do when I do two conventional massages. It doesn't just energise the client it energises the therapists and that's one of the reasons why so many therapists are turning to it."

Sarah believes she is the only therapist in Halifax offering No Hands and wants to spread the word. Her full body No Hands massages last one hour and cost 35, but the first 10 people who book one will get a treatment for 15.

She plans to do more advanced training in No Hands so she can offer detox and colon massage treatments.

She is excited about the colon treatment because she says the body's health depends on the proper functioning of the bowels, and it can be a powerful tool in helping people to help themselves.
