Review: Las Cuevas Restaurant

THAT sounds different – slip into the cave, relax, eat and drink what you like.

So we did and we weren't disappointed.

Las Cuevas, (The Caves) on Lister Lane, Halifax, doesn't appear much like an eatery from the outside but once you scale the wooden staircase you could be just about anywhere.

In this case a huge restaurant and bar decorated in a way that makes it resemble a colourful subterranean chamber.

The tables and chairs are functional and Kamy on the electronic keyboard adds to the ambience with toe tapping numbers from Spain and other Mediterranean hot spots.

A large screen shows what the restaurant calls "Falmingo" dancers and the magic of Latin and Spanish entertainers.

We went on a Saturday evening and fortunately there were a couple of large parties joining in the fun.

Without them, I suspect the atmosphere might have been lacking.

I'd never been for tapas before and had expected it to be all potato skins and dips, so the menu was a pleasant surprise, if a bit daunting.

Our host suggested we try two or three plates each, which with four of us turned out to be more than enough.

It clearly pays to be on good terms with your friends with this type of dining and not to be too polite or all the best dishes get snapped up while you are pouring the wine.

Speaking of which, we managed to finish off a bottle of merlot and several beers without too much trouble.

Along the way we tucked into pan de tropical – very tasty toast topped with spinach, tomatoes and cheese – and a plate of Spanish cured meats.

Also, pan fresco, freshly baked bread served with salsa and alioli – a traditional Spanish garlic and oil sauce, a bit like mayonnaise.

Then it was on to mussels, or mejillones, in a creamy garlic sauce.

Although they were a bit on the small side, they were delicious and ample for two.

Deep-fried crabcakes with a sweet chili dip went down nicely, although it didn't taste much of crab with the strange addition of lamb casserole and potatoes in garlic and wine.

You can't beat a good paella, which, on this occasion, was made with chicken and sausage. Very nice!

Although the desserts looked inviting, we settled for another drink instead.

By this time, Kamy had unplugged his organ and we were on to more usual Saturday night music better suited to the late night revellers.

Las Cuevas is open every evening from 5pm, except Mondays, and every Thursday diners and visitors can book in for salsa lessons.

There are early bird discounts from Sunday to Friday and set menus for group bookings.

We found the service in the caves efficient, friendly and helpful.

It is an attractive venue, especially for groups and individuals who aren't really sure what they want to eat.

We four had a very enjoyable evening for under 20 a head making it one of the best caves I've ever been in.
