Review: The Prospect Inn

THE New Prospect Inn is, in more ways than one, a pub on a hill. Literally, of course, it stands up there just off the Godley Road, overlooking HX1, a bright white alehouse with outside views stretching out across the town, its panorama taking in all the beauty and ugliness that is Halifax.

But metaphorically too, The New Prospect is a boozer above others, a bar that's a beacon to how all pubs should be.

Surrounded on three sides by greenery, it nestles in its lofty nook, a little tavern offering a warm welcome and an airy atmosphere to those who venture up from the town.

Inside, locals lounge about at a well lit and well stocked bar or in the comfort of corners enjoying banter with friendly staff, while up the stairs and out the doors sun seekers take advantage of what is one of the best beer patios in Halifax.

Even the odd toddler running about isn't that annoying because they're tearing it up largely out of earshot on a specially designed adventure play area, complete with tunnels, rope ladders, swings and slides.

And so, with this in mind, we decided, me and her, one Friday while enjoying a beer and the banter and the brilliance of the townscape – and only slightly wishing we could get away with having a charge round on the kids castle – we decided, well, why not see if the food is as good as everything else?

And thus we dragged ourselves out the sun and into the partitioned dining area and ordered a shared plate of crispy beef to kick things off with.

Good it was, too. Thin slices of spicy, oriental-style cow thrown on to a big old plate and garnished with a salad which – that rarest of things in restaurants these days – wasn't just there for aesthetic purposes but actually, y'know, tasted nice.

We went more traditional for the main courses, her the rump steak, me the steak, ale and mushroom pie, both of us salad and chips. Hmm, the chips.

Worth 500 words of praise alone. Rustic, thick-cut monsters. Golden brown and crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy within. Like chips are meant to be. Like a God of chips would cook a chip. Yeah, they were all right.

Her steak was the business too. Slightly tough, maybe, and the option of an added sauce – perhaps peppercorn or stilton – wouldn't have gone amiss but by and large it was a tender cut of rump, worth its place at the top of the menu.

The pie hit the spot too with its meat and mushroom content fighting for supremacy in a thick gravy and under a crispy pastry. Matched with those chips, and a couple of pints of locally brewed ale, it's not just good pub grub, it's good grub full stop.

Not bad, all in all, for a place which has only been serving food for a handful of months after reopening in February.

The New Prospect is a pub on a hill and it's well worth the climb.
